That's wild -- SteelersFan is watching a Military Channel program about WWI right now. The programs claims that the phrase "over the top" came from trench warfare. They had one person saying, "If somebody's talking about going over the top and says he wasn't scared, he's a damn liar."

There's a US Highway near the Four Corners that usta be numbered 666 and is now numbered 491, which annoyed me since I believe that 13 is the number of the (Little) Beast. I guess a lot of people were claiming that the number was the reason for the high accident rate, but I think it was more due to drinking and driving since the DUI and accident rate are both still pretty high.

They've asked Rich Uncle (Millburn) Pennybags this season, too. The prisoner on the jail square is named "Jake the Jailbird," in case it comes up.

Where is he named Jake the Jailbird? Somebody at Parker Brothers might have gotten bored and dreamed up these names some day, but unless this information has been communicated in some way that it could be expected to be (relatively) common knowledge, then this kind of question is a particularly nasty WWOQ.

If you didn't watch this series, there's no way to figure this out. If you did, though, there's a reason the answer is obvious, even if you didn't see this particular episode: Newman was a mailman.

Peter was a really personable guy; he kept talking about how wonderful a day it had been. He also implied that he hadn't been preselected for the show, mentioning waiting in line and getting a free cup of coffee. If true, then the producers are taking a big risk by not checking in advance whether the contestants have any trivia knowledge.

I'd have had to JTQ on this one. I didn't even know the character had a name. I was leaning toward McGreal because of its Irishness and the period when Monopoly was created.

This was the equivalent of a Walk In And Win Week, except that the audience was limited to the selected groups of heroes. While this does mean there wasn't any written test, you can be sure that there were some quick interviews to identify potential contestants with the desired personality, like Peter.

I'm glad you reminded me of the "free coffee" line. Usually, if someone gets to the studio early, the audience wranglers will recommend the Starbucks across from the corner. People in line get nothing from the show (and are lucky to get some hard candies during the tapings, just to keep the blood sugar and energy up). I wonder if TPTB made an exception to that policy and actually treated this audience to that coffee?

So, I tried Googling the source of Officer Edgar Mallory's name. According to Wikipedia:
I1988, Orbanes published the first edition of his book The Monopoly Companion. In the book, all of the characters that appear on the Monopoly board or within the decks of cards received a name. Uncle Pennybags' full name was given as Milburn Pennybags, the character "In Jail" is named "Jake the Jailbird", and the police officer on Go to Jail is named "Officer Edgar Mallory".
Philip Orbanes is identified on his own Wikipedia page as follows:
He was a Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Parker Brothers until the 1990s.
Okay, so he had an official capacity with the game company, but I still don't see any evidence that the character name existed for the first 50 years of the game's history, until this guy sat down and wrote a book about it. And unless someone had read that book (or web pages that directly or indirectly quote it) you wouldn't know he had a name!

Why stop with the cop? There are several other features on a Monopoly board that are just begging for irrelevant, non-canonical names. I think I'll start a Monopoly fan blog and declare that the Water Works faucet is named "Drippy," the Electric Company light bulb is named "Shiny," the Pennsylvania Railroad engine is called "Smokey," and the Community Chest box is named "Pandora." These names are subject to change, depending on what endorsement deals I can negotiate. So be sure to check back frequently in case you might need to answer an important game show question on the subject.

Here's an article about Peter's appearance.

http://pleasantville.patch.com/articles ... illionaire
"About 10 of us went down to the taping to be in the audience," said the 22-year village resident in an email. "We had heard that they might be selecting contestants from the audience, but weren't sure. When we got there, the shows producers interviewed every single person in the audience. I guess that I was just extremely lucky."
