Has a low-level version of Tourette's Syndrome. Not the kind that makes him yell out things but the kind that makes him twitch.
He said it might get worse as he gets more nervous but asked everyone to hang with him.

I am certainly no expert on this and won't claim to be, but according to Encyclopedia Britannica, a gal is a "unit of acceleration, named in honour of the Italian physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564–1642) and used especially in measurements of gravity. One gal equals a change in rate of motion of one centimetre (0.3937 inch) per second per second."

Is the answer given incorrect, is there a potential for multiple answers, or am I just not knowing something I should to understand the correct answer?

Earlier today, I linked to an article that explained that he's a college student, studying Film Studies and French.

Although my earlier "What Else" comment goes down as another jab at the casting decisions by TPTB, this time I'll give them credit for not rejecting Ryan because of his Tourette's. From the general lack of handicapped contestants seen on the show, I've often thought that TPTB want to avoid anything that might make for "unpleasant" TV. That didn't stop them, this time. (Of course, Ryan exhibits lots of energy and excitement, with or without the head twitches.)

Wikipedia agrees with EB.
The gal is named after Galileo Galilei, a physicist who made the first measurements of the Earth’s gravity.
The transcript is correct: Magnetism was the answer they gave on the show, but they appear to be in error.

This is inexcusable! Heads should roll! How did they let this happen? Was no one paying attention, either at the taping, or in the post production editing, or among any of the audience or contestants who saw the show? My initial thought was that the contestant should get his lifeline back, but that's not true, since the wrong answer did not affect his willingness to answer the question. I wonder if they will announce a correction on tomorrow's show. I'll be shocked if they do.

What's the deal with the show's Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/millionairetv ? Doesn't anyone ever use it to post a new comment about issues like this? Is that even allowed? Or is there some other channel for providing serious feedback?

If you click "Everyone (most recent)," you can see that a couple of people already have. Feel free to pile on, sometimes the show page does respond.

Thanks, Chad. I'm surprised they don't get swamped with new posts, since they have over 200K fans. I just tweeted the show to add my voice to those who are calling it to their attention.

Upon further review, the "gal" is a unit of acceleration, not gravity or magnetic force. So at least in theory, it could be used to measure either magnetic or gravitational force, since F=ma. But to the extent that the gal is ever used, it is used to measure variations in gravity, not magnetism.

I think it is problematic to claim that the gal is "commonly used" at all. I managed to get a couple of engineering degrees and to do mechanical design and analysis work for several years, and I had never heard of that unit. And we learned about lots of different units. I think my favorites were the slug and the kip.

Thank you, Chad and Ed. I knew I had forgotten a lot of HS and College Physics, but I was hoping I wasn't THAT bad!!!

(and of course, I was too lazy to look it up myself, operating under the assumption that the show has people that are actually paid to look this shit up.)

I'm glad Ryan explained his condition because it was easier to deal with his twitching.

This is most certainly wrong and I think he should get his lifeline back because of it. The gal is associated with gravity (since Galileo did some studies in this area) not magnetism.

Why should he get his lifeline back? He never attempted to answer the question. The correct answer was available for him to choose. The show's incorrect answer would have become an issue only if he had actually answered the question.

Perhaps you're right - he admitted he knew little or nothing about science so his JTQ would have been used no matter what. It's not like there were multiple right answers or no right answer.
