Lyrically Speaking - 2/21/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 21, 2008 4:10 am

Since I'm still up this late, I may as well go ahead and throw this game up. It's Theme Thursday, so you know what that means. Figure out the common bond between these 12 songs and win a prize!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 3 points for identifying the theme....

1. Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call

2. My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

3. Turnin' back the pages to the times I love best
I wonder if she'll ever do the same
Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied
With knowin' I got no one left to blame

4. Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps
Don't you work as hard as you play
Make up, break up, everything is shake up
Guess it had to be that way

5. On the corner is a banker with a motorcar,
And little children laugh at him behind his back.
And the banker never wears a mac
In the pouring rain - very strange.

6. Leavin' on a southern train
Only yesterday you lied,
Promises of what I seemed to be
Only watched the time go by

7. We got some places to see
I brought all the maps with me
So jump right in...Ain't no sin
Take a ride in my machine

8. In the pool halls, the hustlers and the losers
I used to watch 'em through the glass
Well I'd stand outside at closing time
Just to watch her walk on past

9. Who is to blame in one country
Never can get to the one
Dealin' in multiplication
And they still can't feed everyone

10. Well we know where we're going
But we don't know where we've been
And we know what we're knowing
But we can't say what we've seen

11. I've been tryin' to get to you for a long time
Because constantly you been on my mind
I was thinkin' 'bout a shortcut I could take
But it seems like I made a mistake

12. In and around the lake
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there
One mile over we'll be there and we'll see you
Ten true summers we'll be there and laughing too

1. Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call
Drive - The Cars (The song I always most associate with starfish everytime I hear it....)

2. My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day

3. Turnin' back the pages to the times I love best
I wonder if she'll ever do the same
Now the thing that I call livin' is just bein' satisfied
With knowin' I got no one left to blame
Carefree Highway - Gordon Lightfoot (I don't know why, but I like a lot of Lightfoot's songs, including this one, despite his music not particularly being among my favorite styles....)

4. Mugwumps, high jumps, low slumps, big bumps
Don't you work as hard as you play
Make up, break up, everything is shake up
Guess it had to be that way
Creeque Alley - Mamas & the Papas

5. On the corner is a banker with a motorcar,
And little children laugh at him behind his back.
And the banker never wears a mac
In the pouring rain - very strange.
Penny Lane - Beatles (I got asked back in the infamous -ane rhyming game [the one that introduced us to the legendary J.J. Cale] why I didn't use this song. Well, this is why... I already had it in this game....)

6. Leavin' on a southern train
Only yesterday you lied,
Promises of what I seemed to be
Only watched the time go by
Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots

7. We got some places to see
I brought all the maps with me
So jump right in...Ain't no sin
Take a ride in my machine
Freeway of Love - Aretha Franklin

8. In the pool halls, the hustlers and the losers
I used to watch 'em through the glass
Well I'd stand outside at closing time
Just to watch her walk on past
Mainstreet - Bob Seger (I'm sure there's a good reason this title is one word instead of two, but I sure can't come up with why.....)

9. Who is to blame in one country
Never can get to the one
Dealin' in multiplication
And they still can't feed everyone
Electric Avenue - Eddie Grant

10. Well we know where we're going
But we don't know where we've been
And we know what we're knowing
But we can't say what we've seen
Road To Nowhere - Talking Heads

11. I've been tryin' to get to you for a long time
Because constantly you been on my mind
I was thinkin' 'bout a shortcut I could take
But it seems like I made a mistake
Expressway To Your Heart - Soul Survivors

12. In and around the lake
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there
One mile over we'll be there and we'll see you
Ten true summers we'll be there and laughing too
Roundabout - Yes

Theme? - Names of different things to drive on - or something like that... it's a bitch to describe when I used just about every conceivable synonym for road in one of the songs above. But I was very generous on the theme answers, and if I could tell you knew the theme, you got the 3 points....
