Idol Chatter 2/19

Maybe it's the wooziness I'm still feeling from the migraine that hit me this afternoon, but I was kinda "blah" with tonight's show. Nobody was flatout terrible, but nobody blew me away either. Song choices were kinda boring.

1-David A "Shop Around" A little shaky in the lower register, otherwise fairly solid. The "aw shucks" awkward image could grow tiresome if he's not careful. Milk it too much and he's gonna start sounding like that Looney Tunes Vulture ("awww..nope nope nope") B+

2-Jason C "Daydream" Awkward at the end, but overall a happy snappy little performance. B+

3-Robbie "One" Not overwhelming, but decent, especially when the band powered up. He picked up a little steam at that point as well. B

4-Michael "Light My Fire" I expected more. He didn't hit the higher notes with as much authority as I've heard him do in the auditions. Not his strongest outing. B

5-Colton "Suspicious Minds" Not particularly exciting, but no major miscues. B

6-David H. "In the Midnight Hour" Decent job, but coulda used more soul. B-

7-Garret "Breakin' Up is Hard to Do" A rather pedestrian runthrough but no major problems B-

8-David C "Happy Together" A rough endng spoiled it for him. B-

9-Jason Y "Moon River" Off in a couple of spots and kinda snoozy, but he has a nice tone to his voice. I think his song choice will hurt him with voters. I didn't mind it myself since my mom loves Andy Williams..this song reminds me of her. B-

10-Chekizie "More Today Than Yesterday" Maybe it had more to do with the lousy arrangement, but I was far from impressed, as in z-z-z-z-z. C+

11-Danny N "Jailhouse Rock" Umm..pardon me for being picky, but if these were s'posed to be 60's songs...Elvis did this in '57 thankyewverramuch. Danny couldn't keep up with the tempo, and although he stayed in key, there was very little pizzazz in this performance. Not as hideous as Simon claimed, but not too great. This kid's facial expressions and "oh no you dint" 'tude is already wearing thin. C

12-Luke-"Everybody's Talkin'" Pitch problems and Vegas-y interpretation made this my least favorite performance of the night. C-


I didn't have the volume on the home theatre turned up as I normally do and I was (and still am) a little fuzzy-headed, so I don't know how my reactions differed from what the might've been if I felt better, but that's what I came up with. I wish I had taped it so that I could watch it again with a clearer head. I think Jason Y and Luke are the ones likely to be sent packing.

"Shop Around" was pretty good. Excellent performance, above-average vocal.

"Daydream" was fun, with a very current-feeling take on a poppy 60s song. I could see John Mayer doing this treatment, which is a good angle for this kid.

"One" was decent for Robbie. Good song choice.

I did not like "Light My Fire" from Michael, who I presume was the early favorite. I did like his earlier work. He should make the top 12 as long as he shows more originality than tonight.

"Suspicious Minds" was not a bad performance but only an adequate vocal. Colton smiled too much for a song with lyrics a little dark.

"Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" was note for note on a great song. Didn't hurt it, but nothing new. Made me remember Sedaka's stint as a guest judge, when he drooled over Clay Aiken.

"Moon River" was cruise ship, I said before Simon did. Nice song, of course, but nothing new. It's not that this sort of choice is automatically harmful, as last season's "My Funny Valentine" by Melinda Doolittle proved. But you have to be bolder.

I loved Danny's performance of "Jailhouse Rock," though his vocal was mundane. I gave him points for blasting Simon in such a new sassy way. But he is not top 12 material, not quite. He will make a fun Jack McFarland-type performer, though the world doesn't offer many opportunities for them. Maybe a smaller venue in Vegas, in a few years. He might learn impersonations, and do a one-hit wonder 80s revue.

The others were forgettable for me. No one was dreadful. Chekizie has a very nice smile but I also called cruise ship on his performance.

I would have voted for David Archuletta and maybe Jason C.

I too am interested to know why there were only ten women in the audience instead of 12.

I like his singing and all - and - how can someone who won Star Search and the $100,00 that goes along with it when he was 12, not get that he has a voice and how can he expect us to buy that he thinks people are just being nice? really.......

I expected the camera to pull back from this performance and to find toddlers sitting in front of him singing along - Laurie Berkner style. It was awful

Not a big fan of Rock and I still like this guy. I get what Simon said about him - he looks like a pop guy in disguise - that doesn't mean he is, he just looks too 'boy next doorish'. I hope he stays.

I love this guy. He is cute and can sing. He has stage presence. The thing is - isn't this American Idol? Come one, someone had to say it. I hope he stays.

Not a fan - How can someone be singing this song and smile like that? huh? Hoping he goes home soon.

6-David H. "In the Midnight Hour" Decent job, but coulda used more soul. B-

Middle of the packish, although when he was done, I did say - what a great way to start the season. Hoping he stays a bit.

7-Garret "Breakin' Up is Hard to Do" A rather pedestrian runthrough but no major problems B-

weak, weak, weak. I would not even remember if he leaves now.

I liked what he did with this song. I think he 'made it his own'. He will stick around.

I like him - I like his heart, his purpose and his voice - stoopid move to do that song - I hope he is back next week.

Something about him that annoys the crap outta me - I would not remember him if he left tomorrow. I would not be sad either.

Simon was right - not memorable - hope he gets enough votes to get another shot.

There was and is something different about Simon so far this year. He is being kind and to the point when he is kind.

1-David A "Shop Around"

This was the worst I ever heard him sing, but the best he's performed. He needed this to show he's not a ballady stiff. Nice kid, not my thing, but what the heck.

2-Jason C "Daydream"

Charming kid, unpretentious performance. Unfortunate resemblance to a teenaged Chelsea Clinton, but with a bigger nose. But I like big noses. I adore him and will adopt him, and when he's sleeping I will sneak into his room with a pair of scissors and trim that hair up a tad...

3-Robbie "One"

Man, he coulda ROCKED this, but didn't. Imagine Axl Rose singing Cherish. Huh.

4-Michael "Light My Fire"

I don't care for him, and he scared Erin. Nuff said.

5-Colton "Suspicious Minds"

I love this kid! But he has absolutely no chance to make the final 12.

6-David H. "In the Midnight Hour"

One of the top 2 voices. But the two best voices have zero chance of winning American Idol and 100% chance of winning Vegas's Newest Lounge Singer.

7-Garret "Breakin' Up is Hard to Do"

Cute kid, cute voice, totally pedestrian rendition. Erin wanted him to come to our house. She said, "he has big hair." Outta the mouths of babes....

8-David C "Happy Together"

There is absolutely nothing I like about this guy. His hair is icky. His face is creepy. His clothes are pretentious. I literally look away when he is on camera. That bad. Oozing bright orange Velveeta from every pore.

9-Jason Y "Moon River"

The other of the top 2 voices. With zero chance...


10-Chekizie "More Today Than Yesterday"

Fern's favorite. Ditto on the zzzzzzz. Such cute dimples wasted on no performance oomph.

11-Danny N "Jailhouse Rock"

Sanjaya! You cut your hair!

12-Luke-"Everybody's Talkin'"

If the women pick up on his uncanny resemblance to McDreamy, he's golden. Especially if they use the mute button judiciously.

Much better batch this year. Only one train wreck.
