The legendary Penn State coach passed away.

Subject line edited by TheConfessor. I hope that's all right with everyone. False online rumors have been rampant tonight, but JoePa is still alive.
This was a confirmed news report.

CNN and ESPN are reporting he is in serious condition, but he is not dead yet.

I always thought those reports about Francisco Franco were premature too.

That subject line had me very upset.
No doubt it will be true soon, but I wish jarnon would change the heading.

It wasn't, but the rumors were only temporarily premature.

Paterno died at 9:25 EST this morning , so this thread was exactly 12 hours early. Or possibly 11 hours or 13 hours early. I'm not sure how Board Time works.

Bear Bryant retired as Alabama coach at the end of the 1982-83 season. His last game as coach was one of the New Years' 1983 bowl games; he died on 1/25/83.

Although I'm sure that the troubles Paterno faced the last couple of months affected his health, it's not uncommon for people who work until very late in life to die shortly thereafter (Andy Rooney is another example). Either they work until they are too ill to keep working or something in them changes mentally or physically without the usual work routine.
