Not good at all...

#1 Post by fuzzywuzzy » Mon Feb 18, 2008 2:25 pm

I wanted to give you all an update on my FIL. Dad was doing great til Saturday, when they were giving him a colonoscopy he had a stroke. He can not talk or swallow food right now.

He has been on blood thinners since the hip surgery. Unfortunately, this is one of the medical complications that can happen post hip fracture.

His sister is with him right now, and she has been a social worker for many years. She & fwh had a very candid conversation about Dad this morning. After his rehab is over, he will need to go to an assisted living facility. Reality is = he can no longer take care of himself, and needs assistance.

As some of you know…this is a big lifestyle change to go through. There are many things that will need to be worked out and dealt with in the ensuing weeks & months.

We will need to go to Erie, PA and check out several assisted living facilities. This is where they are originally from, and they have many relatives living there still. It will also be cheaper to live there than in Southern CA. Therefore, they will be moving from the West Coast to Pennsylvania.

We are in shock right now. I am so glad that they came to visit us this past Thanksgiving.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers so that we can get thru this trying time, get our family the help that they need, and settle them into their new life.

I'm sorry to hear this, Kelly.

Is your MIL still alive? If so, what does she think about moving back to Erie?

MIL is alive. She wants to go back there, however, I don't think the reality of it has sunk in yet. The thing is...my FIL is not going to be a problem, my MIL will be. She has many issues that will not be fun to deal with...and may be rather difficult.

I'm very sorry. Your husband is very level headed and has done a fabulous job so far. I'm sure he will guide his parents the best way possible.

Good luck in all aspects. I know it's hard on the entire family. Kay

You've got a tough road ahead of you. You can always vent to us, I know you know that. Hugs and prayers.

Wow, this is awful. I hope there is some recovery of function over time. I think the speech part would be very frustrating.

Hugs to you and FWH.

These things don't just happen to one person--they happen to the whole family. They are lucky to have you, and you have us if you need us.

Be strong.

Update...

#18 Post by fuzzywuzzy » Wed Feb 20, 2008 8:41 am

Thank you all for your thoughts & prayers. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have you all to vent to. It really helps to come here, and share what is happening with my in-laws.

As of yesterday afternoon, my FIL is back in rehab.

His sister leaves today to go back to Buffalo. She will talk with fwh when she gets home. There are things that she wanted to tell him on the phone, but, my MIL was right there, so she couldn't. I am assuming it has to do with their living situation once Dad gets out of rehab...we think that he will be in rehab for 3 months.

Again with my deepest heartfelt thanks!

I have plenty of levely thoughts to pass around.

You and yours have many of them.

Stay strong, come from love and it will all work out.
