Actually, I don't know your context, but for me it is volunteering to show up at my child's school at a prescribed time (usually on a Friday) to read to the class. The kids don't know who is coming to read (thus the mystery). Just before arriving the teacher starts telling the class clues about the reader to see if anyone can guess who it is before they walk in.

I think they do this every week or every other week.

I am guessing that you do not tell your kids that you are coming to read.

When I came to read to both of my kids' classes, they kept telling everyone that I was coming to read and have lunch with them.

Ding ding ding. That's exactly how they do it in Jackson's class.

Last time I did it, I made the clues too easy. So he knew it was going to be me. This time, I only put one easy clue in, the last one. (My birthday being this month).

I read two Valentine's oriented stories and one about a duck being elected president. (They suggest that you try to do topical sorts of books).

Yes. I can never remember the names of the books, but I read one about solving the mystery of who gave a valentine to a dog. It was a Nate the Great book.

I also read a very cute story about a man who went to work, had lunch by himself and never talked to anybody. Then one day, he gets a huge box of valentine's candy sent to him with a note that says "Somebody loves you!"

He is very excited about having a secret admirer and dresses up more fancy and starts interacting more with people around him. He starts doing nice things for the adults and children in the community. He never finds out who sent him the valentine and after a while he forgets about trying to find that person.

Then one day, the postman shows up and says that the valentine was a mistake. That it was meant for the next door neighbor. Then the man is sad, and goes back to his old ways of keeping to himself and not doing much.

The people in the community miss seeing the guy and know he is sad about something. The postman knows why. So he gets everybody all together and they surprise the guy with many valentines and a party to let him know that everyone loves him.

Pretty interesting story for a little kid story.

The third story was about a duck. The farmer makes the animals on the farm do work. The duck doesn't like his work. So he decides to have an election to vote him in charge of the farm. He gets elected.

But he learns that running the farm is hard work. So he decides to run for governor, and wins.

But then he learns that running a state is hard work. So then he decides to run for president and wins.

Then he learns that running the country is hard work. So he goes back to the farm, but instead of working, decides to write his autobiography.


When there are clues, the kids raise their hand if they think their mom and dad fits the clue. You are supposed to start off with hard clues first.

The first time, Jackson guessed it was me by clue three. (lived in Alaska).

The second time, he had no clue until the last clue about my birthday being in February.

Yes, I picked the book.

Some 'kids solve the mystery' book about some oysters and a shopkeeper accusing the wrong person of stealing them. The kids solved it by comparing the sand in the oysters with the sand at the beach areas where the oysters were to have come from.

I only had 20 minutes to read, so I read pretty quickly. But I used lots of different voices and facial expression.

Yes!!! The first time I read the book to myself, it brought a tear to my eye. Most of the valentine's books were awful The illustrations are nice too.

Colorless Mr. Hatch--who works in a shoelace factory and eats a cheese and mustard sandwich for lunch every day with, just occasionally, a prune--is jarred from his reserve by receiving a huge Valentine box of candy with a card that says only, ``Somebody loves you.'' Amazed, he samples it, shares it at work and, buoyed by his friendly reception, sympathetically helps several people out on the way home (e.g., he watches the newspaper stall so that its proprietor can take his cold to the doctor). He's soon baking brownies, hosting a neighborhood picnic, and reading to the local kids.
