Lyrically Speaking - 2/14/08

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 14, 2008 6:48 am

In honor of Valentine's Day, mini's birthday, and, well, just the fact that it's Thursday... it's time for Theme Thursday! The 12 songs below can all be linked by some common theme. PLEASE NOTE: The answer to this week's theme is something a bit more specific than normal, and there is an easy way to answer this that will not be counted! You must hit on the specific part of the theme to receive the 3 bonus points!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the theme.....

1. The sailors and the pilots
The soldiers and the law
The payoffs and the ripoffs
And the things nobody saw

2. And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it
Yeah 'n' he's holding her in his arms late, late at night

3. I call you on the phone
But I never get a rise
So sit there all alone
It's time you realize

4. You know, I'm not the little boy that I used to be
I'm all grown up now, baby can't you see

5. I met a fan dancer
Down in South Side Birmingham
She was running from a fat man
Selling salvation in his hand

6. And the operator says "40 cents more for the next 3 minutes"
Ple-ease Mrs. Avery, I just gotta talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please Mrs. Avery, I just wanna tell 'er goodbye

7. I open up the paper
There's a story of an actor
Who had died while he was drinking
He was no one I had heard of

8. When you see me shed a tear and you know that it’s sincere
Dontcha think it’s kinda sad that you’re treatin’ me so bad
Or don’t you even care

9. Now, I belong to you
From this day until forever,
Just love me tenderly
And I'll give to you every part of me

10. Wake up and it´s still with you
Even though you left her way across town
Wonderin´ to yourself
Hey what have I found

11. At the Houses of Parliament
Ev'rybody's talking 'bout the President
We all chip in for a bag of cement

12. And a cheesy little amp
With a sign on the front said
"Fender Champ"
And a second-hand guitar
It was a Stratocaster with a whammy bar

Theme?

All I see is a possessive noun followed by another word. Hopefully that's it, and the simple thing that doesn't work is people's names in the songs.

1. Smuggler's Blues -- Glenn Frey
2. Jessie's Girl -- Rick Springfield
3.

6. Sylvia's Mother -- Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show
7. Tom's Diner -- Suzanne Vega
8. Cathy's Clown -- Everly Brothers
9. Lover's Concerto -- The Toys
10. To fit the category, this must be called "Arthur's Theme," by Christopher Cross, although I always called it "Between the Moon and New York City."
11. Junior's Farm -- Paul McCartney and Wings
12. Joe's Garage -- Frank Zappa

5 and 12 are fairly informed guesses, but I can't muster a guess for #3.

Theme had better be just Possessive Nouns. I can't think of anything more specific than that that fits all 11 I've listed.

I started out thinking the theme was being in love with someone who is out of reach, but don't know how 9 and 11 fit with that idea.

Oh, well. I'll go with Unrequited and/or Forbidden Love.

OK - so I just went back and looked at the other's answers, and all I can say is . . . well, duh!

I put it down to too much time reading 8th grade essays. My brain is beginning to atrophy.

BASED ON THE TWO I KNEW, IT APPEARS TO BE SONGS THAT HAVE A TITLE IN THE FORMAT OF "SOMEBODY'S SOMETHING." A POSSESSIVE FOLLOWED BY A NOUN.

1. The sailors and the pilots
The soldiers and the law
The payoffs and the ripoffs
And the things nobody saw
Smuggler's Blues - Glenn Fry

2. And she's watching him with those eyes
And she's lovin' him with that body, I just know it
Yeah 'n' he's holding her in his arms late, late at night
Jesse's Girl - Rick Springfield

3. I call you on the phone
But I never get a rise
So sit there all alone
It's time you realize
Nobody's Fool - Cinderella

4. You know, I'm not the little boy that I used to be
I'm all grown up now, baby can't you see
Stacy's Mom - Fountains of Wayne

5. I met a fan dancer
Down in South Side Birmingham
She was running from a fat man
Selling salvation in his hand
Jacob's Ladder - Huey Lewis & the News (Didn't know the other Bruuuuce wrote this one....)

6. And the operator says "40 cents more for the next 3 minutes"
Ple-ease Mrs. Avery, I just gotta talk to her
I'll only keep her a while
Please Mrs. Avery, I just wanna tell 'er goodbye
Sylvia's Mother - Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show

7. I open up the paper
There's a story of an actor
Who had died while he was drinking
He was no one I had heard of
Tom's Diner - Suzanne Vega (The song that plays on the endless loop in Hell....)

8. When you see me shed a tear and you know that it’s sincere
Dontcha think it’s kinda sad that you’re treatin’ me so bad
Or don’t you even care
Cathy's Clown - Everly Brothers

9. Now, I belong to you
From this day until forever,
Just love me tenderly
And I'll give to you every part of me
A Lover's Concerto - The Toys

10. Wake up and it´s still with you
Even though you left her way across town
Wonderin´ to yourself
Hey what have I found
Arthur's Theme - Christopher Cross (Not to be confused with his sons Kris Kross... er, nevermind. BTW, a lot of people thought the secondary title of this song was some form of "Between the moon & New York City", but it's secondary title is actually "The Best That You Can Do"...)

11. At the Houses of Parliament
Ev'rybody's talking 'bout the President
We all chip in for a bag of cement
Junior's Farm - Wings

12. And a cheesy little amp
With a sign on the front said
"Fender Champ"
And a second-hand guitar
It was a Stratocaster with a whammy bar
Joe's Garage - Frank Zappa (I heard this one for the first time just a few months ago, and had no idea at all it was Zappa until I looked up the lyrics for this game. When I think of Frank Zappa, all that ever enters my head is the video for "You Are What You Is"....)

Theme? - Possession! I was afraid a few people might get lazy and just say each song had a word with an apostrophe in it, which is why I added the warning to be a but more specific, but it looks like everyone who noticed the apostrophes also noticed that they were all possessives....

Oh dear me, I really, really hope fanny is playing this game as I type up these answers, otherwise, it may ruin the great spirited contst we had at the top....

She was running from a fat man
Selling salvation in his hand
Jacob's Ladder - Huey Lewis & the News (Didn't know the other Bruuuuce wrote this one....)

See, he's from around here, so he shows up just about everywhere. When Other Bruuuuce, was in concert, he came out and they did a duelling-piano-type deal, and it was great, even though I don't much care for his hits. I saw him at a W&M football game, and was trying to place where I knew him from (school? work?) before realizing who he was. He's pretty normal...

Theme? - Possession! I was afraid a few people might get lazy and just say each song had a word with an apostrophe in it, which is why I added the warning to be a but more specific, but it looks like everyone who noticed the apostrophes also noticed that they were all possessives....

Which is why I didn't have a title for #11--Let's Go had the requisite apostrophe, but not possessive, and I was blahblahblahing the lyrics and didn't get to Junior's Farm. Or Bar. Or whatever....

Everything's ruined and it's all my fault! It wouldn't have been my best effort, 8-10 points (maybe 2 more if I had thought about it instead of just answering right away as I've been doing lately).

My theme would have been "things that belong to people". Would that have been accepted? I know it's not accepted NOW, just interested on whether I would have gotten it.
