Happy Valentine's Day to one and all. Even though elwing and I are an old married couple we still like to have a little romance, so today she will get flowers (daisies, her favorite) at work, then after the fitness center workout a nice dinner. Years ago elwing drove a taxi and there was always a major farm convention in town during Valentine's Day, so she would deliver flowers for a local florist during the day, then work the convention traffic at night, taking conventioneers around to night spots and such while I stayed at home with the boys. She would always manage to take time to have a heart-shaped pizza delivered to us, just to let us know she was thinking about us.

So tell us about this Alaska cruise, ear! What cruise line? Itinerary?

It's a cruise that leaves from Vancouver, BC, and goes up to Alaska. There will be some shore excursions at various stops along the way. As to the itinerary, I'm not altogether sure - as I say, I let elwing take care of those details. It's in June.

Big ship? One of the small ships? An Alaskan cruise will likely be our next big vacation, whenever we can afford it again. The wedding is a bit of a budget buster this year.

Leaving from Vancouver, it's probably one of the big ship lines, then. Cruise West and Lindblad Expeditions both depart from Seattle. Except for the beginning and end of the season, they don't even leave the Alaska panhandle.

Some of the questions you might ask elwing, if you have the time:

1. Does it go only as far as the panhandle or does it proceed to Anchorage? You won't see as much close in if it's the latter, since there's more open water to cross.

2. Is it a roundtrip cruise or do you fly back?

You might not care about these details, but we do!

I always thought it would be have to have a temporary job delivering flowers on Valentine's Day. Most of the recipients would be happy.

At Maddie's school, the kids took a compatibility test about three weeks ago. Today they have the option of paying $1.00 to find out the name of the person most compatible with them in their grade. For $2.00, the find out the names of people most compatible in other grades.

It was a fundraiser for ASB.

Maddie wasn't happy with her results. Because she said that "school spirit" and "sports" didn't matter to her, she was given a list of "stoners" as being the most the most compatible people for her. Her friends said that "school spirit" and "sports" were important and got matched up with the nice boys in their class. She thinks that the whole thing is a load of crap.

If it was to support ASB (whatever that is), why didn't she just donate money?

Well, if somebody offers a compatibility service, you've got to judge whether the folks they say are compatible really are, right?

Obviously, saying Maddie is compatible with the stoners is crap.

Yes. They were stoners in Middle School as well.
