Janice Bailey
Mount Ephraim, NJ
She's been a fan of the show since it went into syndication.
She gets what would have been Cassandra's next question ("Name Change", original level 8) for $1,000.
In 2010, the U.S. Navy's new policy of referring to the Persian Gulf as the "Arabian Gulf" provoked angry responses from what nation?
A: Kuwait B: Egypt
C: Iraq D: Iran
She knows Iran hates us a lot. Egypt are our friends. She rules out the other 2 answers.
D: Iran
Janice wins $1,000 and the Wii game.

That's original level 8, of course.
I learned this from reading Ken Jennings new book, "Maphead," But I'm pretty sure I could have connected
Persian with Iran
even if I hadn't.

That's the second time this has been mentioned (the other day a contestant said he'd been trying to get on the show ever since it came into syndication) - did she not like the primetime version?

This seems like a fairly easy question for a Level 8. I note that her reasoning was skewed, but she still came up with the right answer. Her answer was based on Iran being "mad at us" while the others weren't.

In the winter of 79, I was a single lady, briefly (my now husband and I were 'on a break') and I went to a disco (shut up) with some friends. A guy struck up a conversation with me, and one of my friends asked him where he was from. His answer? "Persia." Being Iranian during the hostage crisis was not a good way to pick up chicks, apparently. I was shocked when some of my friends had no idea -- "wow, Persia? cool!"
