I didn't recall any story about this, but I did remember the essential details about huddling together from March of the Penguins. All of these answers sounded unlikely.

So, here's a National Geographic video that explains it:

Turns out it's based on very slow motion video of the flock, as more penguins join the outer edge. There is a synchronous movement as the penguins take small steps forward together, but calling it "the wave" is a very, very loose interpretation.

Ouch. I presume Jangela was too embarrassed to sing (or even just recite) the lyrics, but that was exactly what was required here to be sure of getting it right.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure this taped the day before my episode as the producer cited this in our pre-taping green room meeting. He tried to encourage us to not be embarrassed and sing or recite whatever you have to aloud to make sure you get the right answer.

I hosted a MORP my junior year in high school. I thought I made up the term.

Me and all my 'too fat or too ugly or too smart' girlfriends who couldn't get a date to the prom. We drank Cold Duck in my basement.

I wondered if she didn't know the words.

Even if they made a mistake or two while reciting those lyrics (which would be another source of fear/embarrassement), they'd eventually get to that phrase, "rockets' red glare," and then they'd be absolutely, take-it-to-the-bank certain that that's the right answer.

Total speculation here but maybe the phrase: "Dawn's early light" caused her to make a quick mental match to the rhyme of light/white - since that comes up so early in the lyrics and rockets red glare is much farther along and thay maybe just be the type of tricks the mind can play on someone where you think you saw/heard one thing when it is really something else - but your mind can't disregard the false idea.

I was thinking it was the 'bright stars' that did her in: the stars are white, and rhymes with bright, and you run through it quickly and maybe that's what happened?

That presumes of course that she knew the lyrics. Perhaps she isn't entirely confident of them. There seem to be an awful lot of people who do not.
