Meredith says that it was a valued punctuation mark and was considered the honorary 27th letter in the alphabet.

My logic was the ampersand was the only one of the four that stood for a word, and so therefore would be the only one that would be considered a "letter".

Also the only one that "looks like" a letter.

I have no idea if that was why they chose it so long ago, though.

And is an ampersand really defined as a punctuation mark?

I didn't know it was once considered part of the alphabet, but I would have deduced b and confidently answerered. It's the only one that makes sense. How could the period be included, but not the exclamation point, when they serve almost the same purpose? The asterisk is too rarely used. The ampersand is the only one of the four that is pronounced when read out loud.

I knew this one because I've seen pictures of Colonial hornbooks with the ampersand at the end of the alphabet.
