Wedding Week - final day
Christian Miller and Kim Mitchell
Tampa, FL
Meredith says she knows that they've been prioritizing their wedding. A lot of money is going toward the honeymoon. Kim's parents are paying for the ceremony and reception; Kim bought her dress; Christian's parents are paying for the rehearsal dinner. Christian says that whatever is left over will go to pay for invitations, the wedding bands "and stuff like that". Meredith says that Brides.com would like to help out by providing the couple with wedding rings. Gurham Jewelers is providing two wedding bands in 24K gold or platinum; the couple gets to help design them.
Kim and Christian have all their lifelines available.
$4K - Native to Borneo, the proboscis monkey gets its name because the males have what distinctive body part?
A - long tail
B - fat stomach
C - spiky hair
D - big nose
Christian knows that mosquitos have a proboscis and so he thinks that's what the monkeys have.
$8K - In 2005, Sandra Bullock married a cable TV star who claims to be related to what Wild West Figure?
A - Jesse James
B - Buffalo Bill Cody
C - Doc Holliday
D - Wyatt Earp
Christian has an idea, but he doesn't want to say it aloud because it might sway the audience if they decide to ask. He says, "The audience looks smart," so he and Kim decide to use their ATA lifeline.
ATA results:
A - 90%
B - 5%
C - 1%
D - 4%
That's the one Christian was thinking of. After the answer is revealed Christian comments, "See, I told you the audience looked smart!"
$16K - Which of these major U.s. universities is located farthest west?
A - Vanderbilt
B - Rice
C - Tulane
D - Emory
Kim smiles and looks at Christian. Christian says Vanderbilt is in Nashville, Rice is in Houston, and Tulane is in his hometown of New Orleans. Kim adds that Emory is in Atlanta.
$25K - "The rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree and back down the hole again" is a common mnemonic for what type of knot?
A - sheepshank
B - half-hitch
C - square
D - bowline
Meredith notes that Christian got excited when he saw the question. He replies that he was hoping it was something simple like "tying your shoes." Kim laughs and says, "But we're going for $25,000." Christian says, "I guess you can't give away the $25,000 question." Christian is sure it's not a square knot because it's the easiest one to tie. Kim thinks it's either A or B, then says, "bowline?" Christian thinks that's too easy also. They decide to use their PAF lifeline and call Jimmy, a very good friend of theirs. Kim says she hopes Jimmy knows his knots. Jimmy is 85-90% sure it's "bowline" then asks for the answers to be repeated. He reiterates that it's "bowline". Kim and Christian agree. Meredith says, "Jimmy would never let you down."
Commercial break
Kim still can't quite believe it's happening. Christian says that coming to New York City was cook but going home with money - "and rings!" Kim adds - would be really special. Meredith tells us that Kim bought her wedding dress from "Making Memories", an non-profit organization devoted to fulfilling the wishes of breast cancer victims. And instead of party favors, the couple is donating the money to a fund for Hurricane Katrina relief.
$50K - In 1958, Elvis Presley began a seventeen-month tour of duty in West Germany as an Army what?
A - weapons clerk
B - supply specialist
C - jeep driver
D - radio operator
Christian wants to say "supply specialist". It seems to him that if the answer was "jeep driver" someone would have got it on tape. He and Kim discuss whether to go with that answer or not, but decide to STQ.
$50K (STQ) - "Sparks" are often visible when you bite into "Wint O Green" Life Savers because the candy contains what substance?
A - carnuba wax
B - methyl sailcylate
C - glycerol
D - soy lecithin
Kim's reaction is to go with B because carnuba wax would make the mint chewy and the other two are ingredients in all gum and mints. Meredith reminds them of the 50/50. Christian says to go with B and save the 50/50 for later. Meredith mangles the pronunciation of "methyl salicylate", saying, "I can't pronounce it but you got it right!"
$100K - What author's wife, Nora, reportedly suggested to him that he write "sensible books that people can understand"?
A - Vladimir Nabokov
B - James Joyce
C - William Faulkner
D - Franz Kafka
They ask for the 50/50 "just because we can do it" - they have no real idea as to the right answer. The 50/50 leaves B and D. "Nora Joyce...Nora Kafka" Christian says questioningly, to Kim's amusement. "Kafka wrote about dreams," Christian says, and adds, "Joyce is very complicated." Kim asks, "If you had to guess, which would you choose? Joyce, because you know that he wrote something confusing?" Christian says yes. Kim then says, "And I'm going with Kafka on a whim." Christian says, "We have $50,000." Kim states, "We're walking!" When Meredith reveals the answer Kim slaps Christian's knee.
