Charles Fawcett's first wife died in 1956 and after a 30-year engagement he married, in 1991, April Ducksbury, with whom he settled in London. She survives him with the daughter of his first marriage.

How could he marry so many women in such a short period of time? Was he a bigamist?

Well, that too. But I suspect it was merely a paperwork shuffle that helped get them out of the country. And I don't think it was all that uncommon at the time.

A couple of francs may have changed hands as well...
