Sad Days In The Detergent Aisle...

As I'm sure you all know, the laundry detergent aisle is my pride and joy at work. I always try to keep it neat and filled, especially on the weekends. But it's looked like the shelves in the Cold War Soviet Union for about a week now.
You may have heard the Wal is converting over their laundry detergent to all concentrated formulas this Spring. I had heard sometime in May was the target date for this conversion, but apparently it is starting early. Although I have doubts our customers are going to like the 2X's over the watery stuff, I wouldn't have a problem with it if it weren't for just one small detail....
Our warehouse has gone ahead and quit carrying all the old regular detergents.... yet they haven't sent a single bottle of the new stuff in yet! So the only stuff on the shelves that's staying in stock is the 2X and 3X stuff we already carried, which isn't much... and of course, since it doesn't take up nearly the shelf space that the regular detergents did, their absence is even more noted. It's a sad sight to see...
Then there's the depression I'll feel from all the items I stocked for years and years leaving me like long lost friends forever, but that's another issue....

What???? WTF did this happen? And is it nationwide? Don't they know that I NEED my huge jugs of watery laundry detergent?
Doesn't matter if it's concentrated, I use the same amount that I do of the regular. As does everybody else. Which is why they're doing it.
They should get a clue by noticing that, while they did away with the regular in order to force people to do their bidding, all the new stuff is still on the shelves.
Why don't they just try to force the metric system on us while they're at it? Because that worked out so well...

Oh come now... we all know that this is being done for
environmental reasons! And you'll know it too, because they're supposed to be accompanying the conversion with in-aisle TV's and all kinds of other idiotic signage crap that are going to show how switching to concentrates creates less waste (I wish I was making this part up....)
Seriously, the honchos in Bentonville are in bed with Al Gore, and that's what this is all about (There are many, many other idiotic "green" things we're doing now companywide that make little if any practical sense other than they may save a tree or two). But you are right that they are going to make a killing off of it since people will not use the concentrates as directed....

Come up with a hernia jug of concentrate, and I'm sold!
You can imagine I wash a ton of clothes....

We have them. Same price as the regular hernia jugs... they just don't give you a hernia....
I guess they would have to come up with a concetrated formula for 600 oz. to create a 2X hernia jug... and that's just getting crazy!

That's news to me. I thought for years that TWMPTB were all Republicans.

I'm sure they still are, but they've been playing the environmental card to boost their public image.
They pimped the hell out of Inconvenient Truth when it came out, and I'm sure with Gore being a good Southern boy, he's tight with the boys in Bentonville, regardless of his political affiliation....

But that's what I want! I wish my husband would look at the number of loads, because Tide with Febreeze or Downy added cuts down on how much wash I can do per jug, so I have to switch them out more often. I guess that's my upper-body workout, besides hauling Erin around...

Mecca is going to get less of my dollars here shortly, anyway. In a couple of weeks, there's a Costco opening about a mile away from me.
So now I can get my laundry detergent in jugs so big they come with a spigot all the time, instead of just when I remember to have my mom get it for me when she goes to Sam's Club.
Yes, you'd wonder why I don't patronize Sam's Club when I have such unfettered love for Walmart. Because it's on the other side of town and I hate driving more than I love Walmart.
Plus (and I feel like such a traitor saying this) I'm all excited about the Costco because I hear they have a much bigger selection than Sam's and better prices as well.

Our Sam's Club came to town after BJ's (East of Ohio only), so I was already a member of a warehouse club when they arrived. So I drive past the Sam's, even though it's in the same shopping center as my usual grocery store.
I've heard good things about Costco, but I doubt we'll get one since the market is saturated here.

I wish we had a Costco here in Kentucky. (No offense to lb.)

Have you considered asking Procter & Gamble to set up a Tide pipeline directly into your laundry room?

To be honest, I couldn't care less about the warehouse club end of the business. I haven't been in a Sam's since I started working for the Wal, and I don't even know if there's a Costco anywhere around here...

Dude, you need to move to Colorado. We've got it all, Costco AND Carmelo! (I was at the game last night, 49 points (YAY!) and the dirtbag bullets ran out the shot clock the last two minutes instead of trying to make points and then circled the human wagons around him so he couldn't get the ball and get his 50. Asses.)

You may be on to something here. You know how the new gee whiz gotta have it thing is pot fillers on the wall above the stove? Detergent fillers on the laundry room wall above the washer! There could just be a big tank in the basement.

I like the idea of the 2x and 3x stuff, but I don't love it. I find that I ended up unthinkily pour too much into my washing machine, wasting it.
I am sore that many people do the same thing.

Oooooh! Tempting! There is an old water softener and holding tank directly behind my washer, from when the house was on well water which is why I needed the plumber last month--one of the kids had pushed in the bypass to the softener, and I wasn't getting water pressure and couldn't figure out why. It cost me $175 in diagnostics to find out I had to pull out a knob to keep the water out of the old, solidified softener tank. So maybe when I remove the equipment, I'll just have them install a holding tank for detergent, with a pump mechanism, directly to my washer.....

I am one of those people that used the wrong amount when using the concentrated version. Soap was everywhere and it took 3 washes to clear it out of my laundry. When you get in the zone while doing laundry, cleaning etc, it can happen.
Costco is great. The best part is all the free samples of food they give out.

Same with BJ's! Erin always wants everything, even if I know she won't like it. And the ladies are so nice and ask where she is if she's not with me, so maybe I wouldn't switch even if we got a Costco...

Not sure if this is what you meant or if you meant sure - either way - it fits.

I'm one of those that doesn't like to measure. I hate messy tops that are a result of pouring the liquid in them. Then it's an extra step to rinse it out.
I just "eyeball" it...same way I do it when I cook. My kids hate it when they ask for a recipe....and I usually don't measure anything. I must admit I have changed the way I "eyeball" the concentrates, but it certainly took some major adjusting on my part.
I do think it's a conspiracy to make us use more when we should really be using less.

I'm all for the concentrated stuff and I commend WalMart (sucks!) for going "green". My mother always told me to put in less detergent than what was recommended anyway, so I've kinda been going green all along.

I like the concentrated detergent. I buy the 2x every time. But I don't trust the cap so I made myself a measuring cup that is the right size for a full load. I fill that, dump it in, and then don't worry about it.
I almost always do full loads. If I don't, then still like using my home-made cup to sight-gauge a fraction rather than the cap.
