Big Ten officiating just keeps getting worse and worse...

The IU-Illinois game was one of the worst I've ever seen.

But I keep saying that every year.

Watched a bit of that on TV last night.

Yeah, it wasn't pretty.

But, I'm used to watching A-10 officials, so I'll match you gripe for gripe.

I saw the last couple of minutes of regulation and the overtimes but that was enough.

The officiating was terrible.

I can't complain too much this year, though.

First place at the halfway point!

OK, it's a tie but it's still first place!

I also want to say thank you to the Big Ten network. I've gotten to see more Purdue games than I have in years. No more listening to the internet streaming radio broadcast while watching the Game Tracker update.

Can't comment on Big 11 officials, but I was wondering if you were at the USA-Mexico game on Wednesday night.

Yeah, I don't watch much from other conferences, so it could be that the others are even worse. Basketball in general has become a sport where the referees seem to be more concerned with "the flow of the game" than correct and consistent application of the rules. This leads to ever more subjectivity which, given what we're finding out about some big-time officials across the country (in all sports) doesn't exactly make me comfortable.

BTW, in case anyone cares, the ridiculousness was definitely two-sided last night. Indiana benefited from some ridiculous calls and no-calls, and Illinois did, too. Not sure who came out on top, but for a boy who played his basketball at the University of Evansville, Steve Welmer sure looks like he's forgotten everything he ever learned about officiating.

Yep, I was there. Exciting game with the crowd really into it. Mostly a pro-Mexico crowd but we did what we could.

Look for the guy in the front row with the Uncle Sam hat and his back turned. That's Senor Cool, another Houston Dynamo fan. I'm next to the green megaphone in his left hand. All you can see is my head (with a white hat) and my right arm waving.

And we're no longer tied. First place, all alone!

At least until Indiana catches up on games played. Although they have a very tough couple of weeks coming up.

February 19 should be lots of fun.

GO BOILERS!!!!!!!

I'll probably be kicked out of the IU Booster Club for saying this, but I'm very happy for Matt Painter(who appears to be a major class act) and the Purdue basketball team. This year is reminding me of the good Bob Knight years, where he wasn't expected to do anything, and wound up with major success.

Keep plugging, Boilers -- at least until the 19th.

Of course Painter is a class act. He and I went to the same high school and college. He graduated from high school 10 years after I did. He almost caught up to me at Purdue. I graduated there just three years before he did. (I got distracted for a while)

Fight on Delta Eagles!

Hail, Hail to Old Purdue!

The state of Indiana is looking pretty good in college basketball this year. Purdue, Indiana, Notre Dame, and Butler should all be in the top 20 this week.

IUPUI also has a good shot at the tournament.

Still some work to do at Ball State, Evansville, Indiana State, IPFW, and Valpo.
