What plays and/or Musicals would you suggest for a Community Theatre in a fairly conservative small Texas town?

Bye, Bye, Birdie and Guys and Dolls are oldies but goodies.

Since you just did one of my favroties, Brighton Beach, I also hihgly recommend "The Nerd."

Good suggestions so far.

Music Man was the musical in 2000. It won't be too soon to do it again in 2009.

Bye Bye Birdie was on last year's schedule, but the show fell apart. Guys & Dolls was originally on this year's schedule, but we were afraid we wouldn't be able to cast it.

The Nerd is a good one. Same playwright as The Foreigner.

How about "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas"?

How about Seussical or Showboat?

There are at least two sequels to Nunsense that have been done here, to great community satisfaction. I'm not a big fan, but they play well in community theatre.

We have done Proof here, with some editing, but it wasn't as popular as some o fthe other things we've done.

I still like the old Fred Carmichael farces -- at least in small doses.

Lone Star would be interesting to stage in a real Texas town, I think.

Our Civic theater did Bus Stop, Visiting Mr. Green, and Over the Tavern this past season, and opened this year with the sequel to Tavern, called King fo the Moon .

They're also doing Smokey Joe's Cafe, The Smell of the Kill, and The Drawer Boy.

Relatively small cast with minimal set requirements. But you need good singers, especially the young couple, who also have a sense of comedy.

I agree about Joseph. It drew huge crowds for our company. So much so that we did it again not the following summer but the one after that.

But the most fun we had was with State Fair.

Our other theatre company does A Christmas Story every other year. That is also very popular.

I like Proof, but I don't like the idea of editing the language, which would be necessary in our community. I edited a little in Brighton Beach, but the language in Proof seems to be integral (pardon the pun). It's been a few years since I read it, though, so maybe I'm not remembering correctly.

I got here late but all of my suggestions have been listed.

I suggest that State Fair be added for the future. A sweet story, good ensemble pieces and Rodgers & Hammerstein.

How about something different, such as opera?

I recommend "Guinefort." It's beautiful and well-suited to a family audience.
