It's Lent and I have been struggling trying to figure out what to "give up". Yes, I'm a Baptist, but our church is more liturgical than most and we observe the seasons of the Church year almost as if we were Episcopalians. The pastor in his homily last night said something that caught my attention. He said that Lent isn't just a time to "give something up" but rather a time to take something on (which almost by definition means giving something else up). It seems to me, then, that it's not about giving up sweets (as so many people around the office say they are doing) but rather committing to doing something with the time and money saved by not consuming sweets. So I've made my choice and we'll see if over the next 40 days (not counting Sundays) I can follow through with it.
