I adopted Merv today

#1 Post by Beebs52 » Wed Feb 06, 2008 4:17 pm

And will pick him up tomorrow. He's one of 10 strays, black/white/brown tabby tigery puss. Maybe two and a half months old. He has had his first round of shots and as soon as I get him neutered the Humane Soc will refund $50 of the adoption fee.

I was surprised that it wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be going into the shelter. There weren't too many cats, but the older ones, all of whom were so, so sweet, made me sad. I did not even look at the doggie area.

The people behind the desk were pushing Drew, a spunky 7 month old black and white cat, who lives in the office area. He's quite cute. With death grip paws and claws and teeth that bled me out for a few minutes. He thought it a good idea to climb up the front of my body. Luckily I was wearing tights today, otherwise what spider veins I don't have would have been lying on the floor deflated. I have puncture wounds all over. Then he did it again. And again.

Nope. Not Drew. Poor Beebs would have apoplexy and Jeff would have flung him across the block.

Tomorrow I take PTO and pick up Merv and get him acclimated.

Hail Merv!
Well, then

Drew sounds like what TuckerMonster does now, at 6 years & counting. As a babe he was hyper, but didn't start with the slashes until I felt it would be abandoning him to certain death to return the little monster.

Last night I changed the litter box, marvelling at its usual occupant's rare inattention; generally he has to inaugurate any new litter 1st thing. Then I got to the bottom of the stairs with the reeking bag, & encountered a very familiar-looking cat, who lunged for the door to the outer world, which I had very almost opened.

My housemate insists they could not have let the cat out, earlier when they went out or came back, because they are perfect. No, the cat must have just been disinterested in new litter, disinterested enough to not even show up for it, but then had run out ahead of me-with-used-litter so fast I didn't notice. Yeah, sure. When I herded cat upstairs, he didn't even want to go the last flight, & I had to carry him. That's how comfy he'd gotten with the good old stairwell in the 2 hours or so he was out there. No scratching to be let in, no plaintive cries, no nothing.

Hurray! Welcome to Merv. Can't wait until you can share his photo with us.

I'm thinking you shouldn't tell us when you get your $50 back, though. You know how sensitive Bruce is when certain topics are mentioned.

I've been wanting to ask this, too. Is Merv named in honor of the Sooners' director of football operations? (I thought it perhaps had a rather Jeff-esque quality.)

Congratulations to Merv on finding a home with a very cool family. And congratulations to you for having Merv pick you.

I anticipate he will be posting here in no time at all.

It breaks my heart to think of all of the adult animals who get dumped because their humans move, pass on, or, worst of all and far too frequently, because they are no longer "cute" little kittens and puppies. I get very sad and wish I could do something about it, but my budget and my house are only so big....

Welcome, Merv! We can't wait to meet you. You'll find that the Bored is very four-footer friendly.

He's here! I'll get a pic when he's settled in. He has the BEST motor and is a lover. He squeaks. He slept on me for awhile while we napped and he put his paws on my face. Awww. Right now he's on my shoulder. Beebs could care less tho Merv is still in the hissing stage for him.

So, what else do we need around here? How about the lost chocolate Lab that Jeff caught running down our street. Collar but no tags. Very healthy and obviously someone's doggie and very friendly. Until he grabbed onto the rawhide bone that Beebs never chews on. Then he growled. Hmmm. So I fed him and watered and scooted him out for a bit while Jeff puts up signs. I've posted on a local petfinder link, called our vet and the Humane Society to see if anyone's reported a dog.

I'm thinking we're due for an emu or a ferret.

Oh. The name Merv just came to me in a vision. I'll have to ask Jeff about that guy. Perhaps he was channelling to me.

Merv is awesome.
Well, then

I feel bad that we had to call Animal Control for the chocolate Lab. He proceeded to hump the Beebs, who is so non-alpha and has bad hips, and if Jeff hadn't been here I don't know how I would have gotten him off. Also, he totally flipped out when seeing Merv through the window, with that deep throaty bark that signals "I want to eat that." We decided that wouldn't fly, after he also growled and was nasty when chewing on the rawhide bone and stuffed animal he found when inside.

Beebs and Merv come first and I do feel bad about the dog, but hopefully someone will call or email soon from the postings I've done and the signs we put out. Animal Control also has scanners for chips so maybe that will work.

Crap.

Really. It wasn't pleasant. I think there may be a bit of pitbull in the dog based on observations of body conformation and pertinent parts. But what do I know.

I present a sleeping Merv with the motorboat accompaniment (you can't hear it).

He bit a hole in my index finger, well, not a hole, just a holelet, when spooked by Beebs as he was trying to get off my shoulder. Never mind the claw trenches in my scalp. I must remember to pat BB when Merv is elsewhere. Or not on my scalp or hand.

So is that Merv in your new avatar? Bear with me, I'm having a bad week you know.

That's a very, very cute, sweet looking kitty, even if it's not Merv.

I have one of those, too! My little Sativa. She's a sweet thing.

As a side story, you all know...... I'm old. I do not keep up with the latest in too much of anything. Especially types of, uh, recreational smokes. My granddaughter brought Sativa home several years ago. I thought what a pretty, and unusual name.......Sativa. Only last year, or so, my sweet baby girl finally told me that Sativa is a type of marijuana. If she hadn't been 22 years old at the time I would have spanked her. I'm thinking what the people at the vet's office must have been thinking as I presented them "Sativa."
