Lyrically Speaking - 2/6/08

#1 Post by Gimme A Squiggly » Wed Feb 06, 2008 5:24 am

I'm surprised LB offered me the opportunity to host an LS game for him, given how I love to torture him and his co-workers with the same mind-numbing songs over and over again all night long, but then again, I do sign his paychecks, so it was the least he could do for me.

The Wal~Mart radio network is a fun thing to listen to, perhaps second only to the continuous loop of It's A Small World After All at the Mouse's place. LB particularly loves my holiday favorites I play every night in November and December, such as the poigniant Dominick the Donkey, the catchy Chipmunks Christmas Song, and the Christmas present for the ear "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas". Even during the 2 months when it's not Christmas time, I can still play all kinds of Nazi death camp favorites for my minions like the Hokey Pokey, the Hamster Dance, and that masterpiece of CIA level torture the Peanut Butter & Jelly song (with a baseball bat!).... and those are just the songs that sadistic associates at other stores actually call in and request every night!

It was hard picking 12 of LB's favorites for this game, as I could easily fill up an entire week of Wal~Mart Radio favorites, but here is what I came up with.... the Best of WMR! 11 of these songs run on the loop that plays in the late evening or pre-dawn hours... and one is an every night request that causes LB to try to throw bottles of Fabuloso® at the speakers....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist. And don't be disappointed when you get a low score.... BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

1. I'll need a credit card that's got no limit
And a big black jet with a bedroom in it
Gonna join the mile high club
At thirty-seven thousand feet

2. You say you've cried a thousand rivers
And now you're swimming for the shore
You left me drowning in my tears
And you won't save me anymore

3. Hey farmer farmer
Put away that D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!

4. You little doll all you do is play
You’ve got a new baby ev’ry day
But some day it’s gonna be me, me and only me

5. Well I think it's time to get ready
To relax just what I have found
I have lived only half of what I am
All clear to me now

6. She calls me up at ten past midnight
'Cause she and some guy just had some big fight
And I say "well maybe he's just not all that bright"
She tells me it's not his brain that she likes

7. This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
You got it, you got it
I miss the honky tonks
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
You got it, you got it

8. I'm going all the way
Sooner or later going to love somebody
I don't care how long it takes

9. On the South side of Detroit city
I'm working all night on the line
Under black smoke stacks
Building Cadillacs, Jack
Not one of them will ever be mine

10. I'm sorry.
Why should I say I'm sorry?
If I hurt you,
You know you've hurt me too.

11. Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowd I'm pushing
Chemicals all rushing through my bloodstream

12. 'Cause I found what the world is searching for
Here, right here, my dear
I don't have to look no more
And, oh, my babe, I hoped and I prayed for someone
Just like you to make me feel the way you do

I hope you don't HATE all of these!

1. I'll need a credit card that's got no limit

Rock Star, Nickelback. Stephen loves this!

2. You say you've cried a thousand rivers
And now you're swimming for the shore
You left me drowning in my tears
And you won't save me anymore

It's Bon Jovi, one of Stephen's other faves. It's a repetitive song and I can't pull it....

3. Hey farmer farmer
Put away that D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!

Big Yellow Taxi, I'm guessing you hear the Counting Crows version?

4. You little doll all you do is play
You’ve got a new baby ev’ry day
But some day it’s gonna be me, me and only me

Nope

5. Well I think it's time to get ready
To relax just what I have found
I have lived only half of what I am
All clear to me now

My Love is Alive, Gary Wright? The Dream Weaver guy? I think....

6. She calls me up at ten past midnight
'Cause she and some guy just had some big fight
And I say "well maybe he's just not all that bright"
She tells me it's not his brain that she likes

Nopers

7. This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
You got it, you got it
I miss the honky tonks
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
You got it, you got it

Nothing But Flowers, the GREAT Talking Heads!

8. I'm going all the way
Sooner or later going to love somebody
I don't care how long it takes

This could be anything. Fairly generic...

9. On the South side of Detroit city
I'm working all night on the line
Under black smoke stacks
Building Cadillacs, Jack
Not one of them will ever be mine

This has to be the nightly request! One Piece At a Time, Johnny Cash. Pretty funny, but I suppose it could be retired after a couple DECADES!

10. I'm sorry.
Why should I say I'm sorry?
If I hurt you,
You know you've hurt me too.

Also too generic to place.

11. Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowd I'm pushing
Chemicals all rushing through my bloodstream

Earworm! ACK! Every frickin' time we meet one family at our beach house, my husband pulls out White Ladder and I gotta endure this nasal drone over and over and over until it's mercifully time for Toad the Wet Sprocket...

Babylon (and on and on and on..), David Gray

12. 'Cause I found what the world is searching for
Here, right here, my dear
I don't have to look no more
And, oh, my babe, I hoped and I prayed for someone
Just like you to make me feel the way you do

Familiar, but nope.

No, a few of them I actually like, or grew to like, and that's why I weaselled them in here. But the vast majority are songs I wish I could get out of my head....

I think it's funny you got #11, as well as it's companion song I put in Monday's game (Robbie Williams' "Angels"). There was a time a few years ago before the all-request show was born when those two songs, as well as #10 and an obscure cover version of #5, were an absolute leadpipe lock to be played at some point every single night.....

Spoiler

I can't recall hearing any music at all when I'm at the local Mecca. Or even Muzak. I used to go in the small hours, but since I became a delicate flower I go during the day, so maybe it's too noisy to hear anything.

1. I'll need a credit card that's got no limit
And a big black jet with a bedroom in it
Gonna join the mile high club
At thirty-seven thousand feet

Rockstar - Nickelback

YAY! I remember now that a while back when I was commenting on the lyrics being censored that weren't even dirty on this song, you said you would have something to say about that later.

2. You say you've cried a thousand rivers
And now you're swimming for the shore
You left me drowning in my tears
And you won't save me anymore

I'll Be There for You - Bon Jovi

3. Hey farmer farmer
Put away that D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!

Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell

4. You little doll all you do is play
You’ve got a new baby ev’ry day
But some day it’s gonna be me, me and only me

Wild One - Bobby Rydell

5. Well I think it's time to get ready
To relax just what I have found
I have lived only half of what I am
All clear to me now

Love is Alive - Gary Wright

Now that I think about it, they might play Dream Weaver a lot. At least I end up singing it a lot, and there's no other reason for that. Their music must be subliminal, with undertones of "buy it, it's only 98 cents!"

10. I'm sorry.
Why should I say I'm sorry?
If I hurt you,
You know you've hurt me too.

That song by Buckcherry is now going through my head and pulling an Everly Brothers on me.

Ouch, you'd think somebody who goes to Walmart as much as I do would know more of these! And I started off so well, too.

ANSWERS/POINTS

#19 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 07, 2008 7:18 am

1. I'll need a credit card that's got no limit
And a big black jet with a bedroom in it
Gonna join the mile high club
At thirty-seven thousand feet
Rockstar - Nickelback (Ugh! A so-so song becomes intolerable when you have to hear it every ^#*(@^ night! Yet, it came up on the request show without fail almost every time during the last half of 2007. And this is the "sanitized" version fanny mentioned awhile back, as TWMPTB apparently think that the words "drugs" and "drug dealer" are too hard core for us associates to deal with  ....)

2. You say you've cried a thousand rivers
And now you're swimming for the shore
You left me drowning in my tears
And you won't save me anymore
I'll Be There For You - Bon Jovi (This one is usually playing around the time we come in at 10:00. If it isn't this one, it's that Santana song that I can't place, but I can hum the melody to in my sleep....)

3. Hey farmer farmer
Put away that D.D.T. now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!
Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell and many, many others (This is a WMR classic that dominated in the pre-show days in the early part of the decade. I believe it was the Amy Grant version that was always played, but it gave me my first ever exposure to this song...)

4. You little doll all you do is play
You’ve got a new baby ev’ry day
But some day it’s gonna be me, me and only me
Wild One - Bobby Rydell (It is pretty common to hear some really old, moldy songs like this between 5 and 7 AM [the end of the overnight request show and the start of "Tune Radio" in the morning]. I chose this one to represent that genre. I could have easily used its companion song, "Ohhhh Waaaaaa.... Walk the Watusi!!!")

5. Well I think it's time to get ready
To relax just what I have found
I have lived only half of what I am
All clear to me now
My Love Is Alive - Gary Wright (But it's not Gary Wright's version that got played almost every night during the "molden era" of WMR from 2001-2004. It's a cover version sung by a woman who I have been unable to identify yet... and I have to say, I like her version of it better than Wright's....)

6. She calls me up at ten past midnight
'Cause she and some guy just had some big fight
And I say "well maybe he's just not all that bright"
She tells me it's not his brain that she likes
Maureen - Fountains of Wayne (I had no idea this song, which I have really grown to like, was done by FoW... the same group who tortures me on my radio station with the blechy Stacey's Mom. You know how sometimes on TV you'll be watching commercials, and all of a sudden a commercial comes on where the sound is louder than the rest of them. When this song comes on, you'll know it, because the volume goes way up [Kool & the Gang's "Joanna" is another WMR classic with loud volume]. Unfortunately, M-m-m-m-Maureen will go down as the Winter LS's fourth shutout on the season....)

7. This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
You got it, you got it
I miss the honky tonks
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
You got it, you got it
Nothing But Flowers - Talking Heads (This one certainly isn't done to death, but I always thought it was a very ironic song for WMR to be playing at all [See Big Yellow Taxi, to which etaoin once pointed out the irony of its WMR airplay when I mentioned that during an FNGD game once]...)

8. I'm going all the way
Sooner or later going to love somebody
I don't care how long it takes
Nobody's Fool - Kenny Loggins (see below)

9. On the South side of Detroit city
I'm working all night on the line
Under black smoke stacks
Building Cadillacs, Jack
Not one of them will ever be mine
C-I-T-Y - John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band (These two are companion songs in my book, as one or the other tends to pop up right around 11:00... and they have one other thing in common. They are lost favorites of mine from two artists who are better known for other hits in the 80's. C-I-T-Y especially seems to have fallen through the cracks of music history, which is sad...)

10. I'm sorry.
Why should I say I'm sorry?
If I hurt you,
You know you've hurt me too.
Get Lost - Eric Clapton (The quintissential classic from the molden era of WMR! This song was played EVERY morning at some point between 5 and 7 AM during the first half of the decade... and like many other WMR classics, I had no idea what it was until I was finally able to remember and look up some of its lyrics. When Barbarella asked for our favorite song from 10 different artists in her December 2002 LS finale, I jokingly put this one for Clapton just because of its incessant WMR airplay....)

11. Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowd I'm pushing
Chemicals all rushing through my bloodstream
Babylon - David Grey (This is the song I inserted when I removed Robbie Williams' "Angels" to put in Monday's game. They are interchangable companion songs, and both were heard almost every night in that wonderful molden era of WMR I've referred to several times...)

12. 'Cause I found what the world is searching for
Here, right here, my dear
I don't have to look no more
And, oh, my babe, I hoped and I prayed for someone
Just like you to make me feel the way you do
Never Never Gonna Give You Up - Barry White (THE WMR classic of the modern era. The only WMR classic you could set your watch by... it was played at 10:15 PM last year every third night. You never heard it at any other time. Some people on evenings used this song as an alarm clock to let them know it was time for their break. It was also a running gag between me and a couple other of my co-workers that when we heard that first distinctive note of this song, we would all yell at each other, "It's quarter after ten!" We are a sad lot...)

I predicted that the scores would be bad, and they certainly were. Only 2 players scored better than 50%....
