Hotseatitis--or "Hotpodiumitis"--still seems to short out the ability to do simple math. Steve almost reached for the ATA immediately. Meredith encouraged him to take his time, but Steve said he still couldn't do it. At least the delay gave the audience time for some calculation.

The words sounded Greek to me.

Besides that, Evzones had to refer to some kind of special unit. My immediate hunch was of the Greek ceremonial troops who dressed in old-fashioned, traditional uniforms.

I've tried to brush up on potent potables in case I ever get on J! but this isn't one I'm familiar with. JTQ #1.

I'm surprised the audience could do the math that quickly. 90 minutes is 1.5 hours, so the reciprocal is 2/3, multiplied by 24 leaves 16.

Really? I've never heard that acronym, but it's not hard to decipher.

"Syntagma" is the giveaway for me. "Syn" (Greek "sun") is a common prefix meaning "together" (as in "synagogue" or "synonym").

Without the clock, no need to waste a lifeline. The "how would I approach this on the SAT" technique applies, especially for the mathophobe.

90 minutes = 1.5 hours. Which choice gives a 24-hour day?
d. 28 is already more than 24. Eliminate with extreme prejudice!
a. 12 x 1.5 = 24? No, 12 x 2 is 24. I know that much.
b. 16 x 1.5 = 24? That's in the ballpark... yeah, looks right.
c. 20 x. 1.5 = 24? No, that's 30.

One of these choices has to be right... must be B. I only hope I can think this clearly (and get math questions!) if/when I ever get to the hot podium.

Another way to look at it, especially if the 1.5 freaks you out, is as follows:

1 time each 90 minutes =
2 times every 3 hours =
4 times every 6 hours =
8 times every 12 hours =
16 times every 24 hours. Done.
