Sheesh! A guy gets his one chance in a lifetime to win a million dollars and he's not even willing to risk the loss of $1050 to keep playing the game? The expected value of a random guess was a lot more than the $1050 that was at risk. Too bad he took a contestant slot away from someone who might have appreciated the opportunity.

I wonder if his extreme risk aversion has anything to do with his career choice to become an insurance broker.

It's a shame he couldn't associate "faces" with Mt. Rushmore - or perhaps he didn't know where Mt. Rushmore was.

No, he actually mentioned Mt. Rushmore and South Dakota. He might not have been certain Mt. Rushmore was in South Dakota, but he knew it might be, and that it wasn't in any of the other states suggested. Ridiculous!

I didn't actually get to watch the episode since my DVR was off (when the power went out overnight it switched off but normally when the power resumes it comes back on). So he knew Mt. Rushmore, and that it wasn't in any of the other states and he still couldn't go for it? What a waste of an opportunity!

I missed yesterday's show, then I was late logging on today, so I'm glad you started the grumbling without me.

Sheesh!

He knew Mt. Rushmore was in South Dakota. He said something like, "what comes to mind are the faces on Mt. Rushmore, and that's South Dakota..."

He just wasn't positive that Great Faces/Great Places was the slogan for SD, that maybe it could have been the slogan of one of the other 3...

But then, the whole audience loudly started groaning when he said he thought he'd have to walk away (knowing that he was on the right track with the SD comment)... and he STILL did it!

Poor guy must be awfully desperate for money to have not pulled the trigger on something with such an obvious clue to him- as opposed to even having to do it with a blind 1 out of 4 guess.

Very sad.

Is there any wonder why we haven't had a millionaire in going on 9 full years now? How does any contestant coordinator worth their salt let someone who won't risk $1000 onto the Hot Spot? I thought Peirce not going for it was pretty bad, but this...

Clearly affirmative action is action.

Note: I have no clue the racial makeup of the contestant. This comment is tongue in cheek and related to a previous thread where someone was highly offended by my tongue being in my cheek.

That's true. But as for your question, I'm guessing you haven't gone to auditions much or read the many audition reports posted here, because good, confident game play is not what they're looking for. As long as the contestants have the requisite energy, perkiness, and entertaining anecdotes (and, yes, pass one 30-question written test, along with many other auditioners who are not cast) the APs are happy. If risking a little money is a very emotional decision for them, so much the better.

The last thing APs want to see is professional poker player behavior, where they can risk huge sums without the slightest facial twitch.

One of those random facts that stayed in my head, I remembed when I was little (probably under 10). South Dakota's tourism board was running ads encouraging people to visit and at the end of those commercials I remembered they had a jingle with a group of people singing, "GREAT FACES..........GREAT PLACES..............SOUTH DAKOTAAAAAAAAAAA!"

EDIT: Just a quick google
