Ross was on the right track in thinking that it referred to one of something. Unfortunately he picked the wrong one.
I guess he was unaware of the rhinoceros in the room...

I did not know this, but a single cemetery having an "Authors Ridge" section with the final resting places of the 3 literary giants named above AND Thoreau seems like fair game to me.

Local residents, History, American Lit. and/or cemetery nuts might all know this one. A Melville fan might know he's buried elsewhere.
