Plaxico Burress

I remember him from his high school days (how can you forget a name like Plaxico?) since he is from Virginia Beach and was a star player and always in the paper, but I just got an email with my son's English assignments for the week, and the teacher and his wife both used to teach at Green Run and they both taught Plaxico. They are as puzzled by the name as I always was (mom just liked the sound of it), and it seems he has a little brother named Ricky Ricardo Burress (he went by Ricardo). Different stokes, I guess...
Anyway, they were both apparently good boys, and when they needed to save money, like for the prom, they would give their money to the teacher to save for them so they wouldn't blow it impulsively. Good thinking for young kids!

Any idea why he pronounces his name, PLEHX-ih-coh, despite the fact that it is spelled Plaxico?
When he was at Michigan State they pronounced it like it is spelled, PLAHX-ih-coh, but when he went to the Giants the pronunciation changed.

Ya got me! It's a made-up name with a made-up pronunciation. I would tease my husband I was going to name Mini-me Plaxico or Quilvio (we had Quilvio Veras playing for the Triple A team here) 9 years ago!
Today, he might like it, but he may have killed me long before now....

I'd pronounce it PLEX-ico.

In that case, it was made up by his uncle's parents; talk to them!

Anyone remember when Joe Theismann was pronounced "Theeesman"? He changed it to Thiiiiiiisman at Notre Dame du Lac or, more likely, someone in the sports info office changed it.

Right. Pittsburgh is where it changed pronunciation not NY.

I'd pronounce it PLEX-ico.
Why? Any particular reason to pronounce it with the "E" and not the "A"?
Or are you just disputing my phonetic spelling?
