Off the top of my head I think it was the Irish guy who was on just before Frank Tangredi. Now I realize that was 2000, but they have often been off on the year and sometimes the amounts too (e.g. 100K vs 125K, 1M for when the bonus was in effect).

Yeah, but he helped mislead them with his own deliberations over the question. His first reaction was the same as mine, not realizing the show was set in a real, specific place. "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?"* Then Zachary said that the pineapple had him thinking it was the Caribbean. (And my thought was aren't pineapples associated with Hawaii?) So he asks the audience, most of whom probably don't watch this cartoon, and they went along with him. No surprise there.

IIRC, after the ATA but before he gave his final answer, he also mentioned one more place name from the show, "Bikini Bottom," which he also associated with the Caribbean. (And my reaction was Oh yeah, that's a name they use on the show, but Bikini Island is the Pacific!)

Wow. Just "wow". Like Zach I knew it was "Bikini Bottoms" but had no idea which body of water. I haven't seen enough to know whether this is ever referenced.

OK, I know the song, but never associated "pineapple" with any particular location (it could have been something discarded off a cruise ship, for instance). And although I know about Bikini and its association with "bikini", the idea of "Bikini Bottoms" might just have been a cute idea. I can see how these might point to the Pacific, but that wouldn't have been enough for me.

I didn't know it, but Wikipedia does say it's deliberately associated:

Much of the series' events take place in Bikini Bottom, an underwater city located in the Pacific Ocean beneath the real life tropical isle of Bikini Atoll.[4] Stephen Hillenburg has stated that much of Bikini Bottom was based on the real life city of Seattle.[5] Much of this is supported within the context of the episodes themselves; however, despite implications of the city's location as well as anologies to real life, Hillenburg has stated that he wishes to leave the city isolated from the real world, explaining the Baywatch parody scene from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie as simply a reference to his favorite show of all time.[5][6] The citizens of Bikini Bottom live in mostly aquatic-themed buildings, and use "boatmobiles", an amalgamation of cars and boats, as a mode of transportation. The characters' Anthropomorphism may be due to exposure to radiation from the BAKER test.

Another close friend of SpongeBob's is Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas. Sandy is an expert at karate and lives in an underwater tree dome. When not inside her tree dome, she wears an astronaut-like suit because she cannot breathe in water.
