Heya--since Miss Pea wondered how I was doing, and I obey her in all things...here's what's going on:

Blood sugar is slowly receeding--the oral meds will likely take a few weeks to really kick in but I am obeying the new diet as scrupulously as possible and it is working--blood sugar now routinely half what it was just a couple of weeks ago but still about 20-30 pts too high--I am getting there.

The real bitch is that many of the foods great for someone who also has coronary artery disease and has had a couple of mild MIs are terrible for diabetes--take for example pretzels. A great heart healthy snack--mongo carbs per serving. On the other side, I can eat all the meat, gravy, and stuff like that I want as a diabetic but my arteries will wind up looking like a garden hose with sand caked in it. Then, there are the kidney stones...at least THEY seem gone.

I am working out at least 5 times a week on our new treadmill and feeling much healthier than I have in a long time.

Do I miss just eating everything I want w/o thinking about it--yup, sure do. But, as a wise person once told me, there is no ice cream cone or double cheeseburger worth more than seeing your baby grow up.

Side note: I did stray this past weekend at my parents' house in Tampa--there for my bro's 44th birthday with Buffette and my stepdad makes the world's greatest frozen margaritas. I thought--this is where I draw the line, I'm having one. In fact, that one was so good...anyway, two hours later I tested my blood and assuming I hit my own finger...130. Very low reading for me.

My book called "Buff's Margarita Diet" will be at Barnes and Noble soon...

Can I get an advance copy? That is a diet I could follow!

Great work, Buff!

I have been told that if you plan your 'cheating' around extra exercise, your body will let you do it.

Let me know how that works out for you, seriously. I'm hitting the a similar problem with keeping the newly diabetic S.O. fed. I have no freaking idea how to solve it, he's nutrition clueless (still hasn't gone to a nutritionist. I may kill him before the diabetes/coronary issues do) and I'm concerned that I'm probably doing all the wrong things for one that are the right thing for the other.

Glad to hear you're hanging in there. Pass me one of those margaritas.
