They never said what Barton does (I was guessing What Else) but it turns out he's the founder of a foundation called Global Colors.

I've heard of the issue, but I haven't heard the expression "Green Dam". My attempt to reason it out was leaning toward building nuclear power plants, as an alternative to mega-projects like the Three Gorges Dam. But going with that answer would presuppose that the Chinese government acknowledged that there was environmental damage from that project.

Lucky for him that he heard his mother's voice. I had a feeling that New Hampshire would be a big distractor among those whose knowledge of geography was a little better than their history, and so it was.

Making this another one of those questions that scare me. I've been far from perfect on the Classic Millionaire Qs, but I'm starting to doubt that I'll ever get out of the first third if by some miracle I ever get on the show.

That's what the lifelines are for!

And TPTB want to make sure contestants burn most of them before they're playing for the big money.

I suspect the audience answer was based on the fact that New Hampshire borders Maine on the west, so it would make sense for it to be the right answer. But knowledge of colonial history would produce the right answer.

Estonut suggested that we list the unrandomized topic tree number next to the topics.

We could adjust the format some more, if it seems unclear.

It is a little sad when someone (and in this case, not just the contestant but 64% of the audience) misses this kind of a question. Maine became a state as part of the Missouri Compromise, one of the big events in American history.

It's also a common factor in quickie-mystery things, as where someone is selling a rare book that was published in 1798 in 'Portland, Maine,' and Ellery Queen knows it's a scam because in 1798 Portland was in Massachusetts. My sweet Margaret used to watch the 'Dark Shadows' soap, which was set in what is now Maine, but when they had a storyline which involved (I think) 'this is how it all started' they were very careful to describe the story as taking place in Massachusetts.
Innocent, naive and whimsical. And somewhat footloose and fancy-free.

It was the District of Maine then so that wouldn't have been conclusive.

"Portland, Maine" wouldn't have been wrong in 1798, since that region had been known as Maine since the 1600s. Maine was part of Massachusetts until 1820, but it was still called Maine. Kind of like today it would still be accurate to refer to "Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe," while acknowledging that Basse-Terre is in France. It's reasonable to say that you're in Lahaina, Maui, without contradicting that you're also in Hawaii, and so on.

Ellery Queen did pretty well, considering that he didn't have access to Wikipedia. But he was no Mark Trail.
