The Boyfriend's operation/ ATTN: Rexer

Rexer --

I cannot remember if I answered you in a previous thread.

You asked about The Boyfriend's operation, now solidly scheduled for Feb. 20 and asked if I could talk about it.

I meant to tell you what it is/was and can't remember if I answered. I don't want you to think I was ignoring you, although I cannot find the thread now.

It's cervical stenosis. He's been with the phone company for 38 years and about 34 of those years have been as a switchman. They are the guys who work on the inside circuits - lots of hands-above-his-head-on-a-ladder work. I am sure a contributing factor.

He will have six discs removed and replaced with bone, then have little titanium hinges put in place - front and back - to stabilize him.

Both neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon anticipate a 12-hour operation. They are very experienced at doing this sort of thing.

He will be in the long, rigid neck brace - no halo - for weeks. We are looking at recovery in three-week increments for as long as six months for complete recovery.

My step mother had one replaced. Everyone I would tell about the surgery would be incredulous. They would argue that I meant fused. No, I would explain, replaced.

Six! Wow!

My dad started as a lineman with the phone company. After training to climb the poles, he asked if he could re-enlist in the Air Force. They said no, so he bit the bullet and learned how to climb. The over his head work was so tough for him, he gave himself 12 months to get an 'inside' job, or he was looking elsewhere. He retired from AT&T after 35 years of service.

Sending good thoughts that your boyfriend comes through it all better than ever.
