Lyrically Speaking - 1/30/08

#1 Post by CharlesFoxSingers » Wed Jan 30, 2008 4:20 am

Today marks the halfway point of the Winter 2008 LS, so who else would LB turn to for the honors of the middle game but us, the guys who sing the lyrics all the time! We're in business singing lyrics on this Bored, because people like LB are too dense to decypher most of what he hears on the radio, and if you don't believe me, look at how bad he did in last month's Lyrically Speaking.

Of course, it's not all LB's fault. I mean, there are people out there who made millions of dollars doing nothing but mumbling songs (Take a bow Mr. Zimmerman.... er, Dylan!). But that still doesn't excuse mishearing lyrics. When TiV used "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in his game (a groundbreaking song that everyone has heard a million times, or about 999,997 times too many) and LB was about the only one to whiff on it... it wasn't because he had never heard that song before. It was because he couldn't understand what the hell Kurt Cocaine was saying. This is where I step in and show people the lyrics...

Below are 12 songs with lyrics as LB originally heard them, only to discover to his surprise that he was singing the songs completely wrong. It's hard to believe that LB always sang about the "wreckin' machine" in Van Halen's "Jump" for many, many years before realizing his error, but this is a good example of the kind of goof you'll see in the following lyrics. And no, there are no "Bathroom on the Right" type lyrics where people are just trying to be funny... these are exactly as LB used to hear them....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 1 point for correcting the misheard part of the lyrics. One of these sets of lyrics contains two different mistakes in 2 different lines, so you can get 2 points if you correct both errors. There are 37 possible points in this game, and I think it's very possible this game could net some very high scores....

1. Wrapped up like a douche
Another runner in the night

2. All the school kids so sick of books
They like to plunk in the middle bed
When the buzzer rings...

3. And the sign said anybody caught dressed placid would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you the right?"

4. That's when she told me a story, 'bout pre-milkin' a cow
And said no hugg-ee no kiss-ee until I get a weddin' vow

5. Carry a laser down the road that I must travel
Carry a laser through the darkness of the night

6. Oh, give me the Beach Boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll

7. and this virtue cannot change
and this virtue cannot change
and this virtue cannot change
Lord knows I can't change

8. I'm looking for attention
Not another question
Shoot yourself, shoot yourself!

9. Yeah right down the drain
The devil would come to me
Workin' on a mystery
Goin wherever it leads

10. Where the dogs of society howl
I can't help being your penpal
I'm going back to my plough

11. Knock knock baby I'm in love with you
Knock knock baby I'm in love with you
Knock knock baby I'm in love with you

12. when I show them 'round my house, to my bed
I had it made like a monkey wrench
with a snow-white pillow for my big fat head

Is it odd that I'm having an easier time of it today when they're not the right lyrics? Ha!

The best one I have of recent memory is Fergie's Glamourous. When it was playing on Vh1 all the time, my sister said something about her talking about shit pains. "What are you talking about?" She said that when Fergie sings "I got champagne" it sounds like "I got shit pains". I said there was no way champagne could sound like that, even with Fergie's put on quasi-ebonic accent. Then when I actually listened to the song with that in mind....ha! I can never hear that song now without thinking she's actually saying shit pains as a joke. Try it!

Spoiler

I'm back and determined to...lose LS for the month due to taking over a week off. ;)

1. Wrapped up like a douche
Another runner in the night

Oh crap. I think the actual lyric is "revved up like a deuce" but I can't remember the name, title or artist. dang.

2. All the school kids so sick of books
They like to plunk in the middle bed
When the buzzer rings...

I think it's "WTF" by "WTF".

3. And the sign said anybody caught dressed placid would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you the right?"

Do I get credit for knowing the Tesla cover and not the original? Do I get a bonus point for knowing the song is on their 5 Man Acoustical Jam album? Do I get some pity for knowing the correct lyric is "And the sign said anybody caught tresspassing will be shot on sight". I'm not sure if that's totally correct because Jeff Keith slurs like a drunken sailor and I could swear it's "will" not "would" but I could be wrong. Have mercy.

6. Oh, give me the Beach Boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll

Another I am stuck on the cover and not the original. I fail at life. Sister Hazel covered it, if it means anything to ya, but I don't know if the cover was ever officially released, either, so I still fail at life. The correct lyric is "Give me the beat boys and free my soul..."

11. Knock knock baby I'm in love with you
Knock knock baby I'm in love with you
Knock knock baby I'm in love with you

More failtime! I need a LOLcat for this game, I swear. The lyric should be "lighten up baby I'm in love with you", I think.

Just tell me you didn't bust out any Toad The Wet Sprocket out while I was away. It will make me cry.

I'd like to point out that there is a typo in my answer to #2, but I'll understand if it's not accepted. That stray "L" can be blamed on the fact that I'm not quite used to the keyboard on my new computer.

But it's your call, and I'm OK with whichever way it goes.

When TiV used "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in his game (a groundbreaking song that everyone has heard a million times, or about 999,997 times too many) (Watch it there bud) and LB was about the only one to whiff on it... it wasn't because he had never heard that song before.

Edited to add: I guess I should actually try reading the instructions when I'm playing, I didn't see the part about correcting the wrong lyrics until after I started checking out everyone else's answers. No harm though, I really did think that these were the correct lyrics.

ANSWERS/POINTS

#24 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Jan 31, 2008 7:14 am

1. Wrapped up like a douche
Another runner in the night
Blinded By the Light - Manfred Mann or Bruce Springsteen

Should be Revved up like a deuce or Cut loose like a deuce (You had to correct both incorrect words to get the bonus point)

2. All the school kids so sick of books
They like to plunk in the middle bed
When the buzzer rings...
Walk Like an Egyptian - Bangles

Should be Punk and the Metal bands

3. And the sign said anybody caught dressed placid would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you the right?"
Signs - Five Man Electrical Vand or Tesla (Yes, I was aware of Tesla's version, even before I had ever heard the original!)

Should be Trespassin'

4. That's when she told me a story, 'bout pre-milkin' a cow
And said no hugg-ee no kiss-ee until I get a weddin' vow
Keep Your Hands To Yourself - Georgia Satellites (And Jerry Lee Lewis!?!?!? Thanks hermillion!)

Should be free milk and a

5. Carry a laser down the road that I must travel
Carry a laser through the darkness of the night
Kyrie - Mr. Mister

Should be Kyrie eleison (Don't worry about spelling, I would NEVER penalize for that!)

6. Oh, give me the Beach Boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll
Drift Away - Dobie Gray (Several others, though nobody, thankfully, mentioned Unlce Kracker)

Should be beat, boys

7. and this virtue cannot change
and this virtue cannot change
and this virtue cannot change
Lord knows I can't change
Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Should be bird you (Somewhere, there is a set of tapes I recorded for long trips back in the mid 90's where I heard Freebird for the first time, and wrote as the title of the song on the cassette cover "And This Virtue Cannot Change"....)

8. I'm looking for attention
Not another question
Shoot yourself, shoot yourself!
Walk Away - Kelly Clarkson

Should be Should you stay, or should you go

9. Yeah right down the drain
The devil
would come to me
Workin' on a mystery
Goin wherever it leads
Runnin' Down a Dream - Tom Petty

Should be Runnin' down a dream / That never (each line was worth 1 point each)

10. Where the dogs of society howl
I can't help being your penpal
I'm going back to my plough
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John

Should be plant me in your penthouse (I was pretty liberal on this one with the first word)

11. Knock knock baby I'm in love with you
Knock knock baby I'm in love with you
Knock knock baby I'm in love with you
Tall Cool One - Robert Plant

Should be Lighten up (I wanted to use this for a special "double words" game in my inaugural LS in 2002.... until I found out what the title was, and that I wasn't even correct on the part I thought was the title!)

12. when I show them 'round my house, to my bed
I had it made like a monkey wrench
with a snow-white pillow for my big fat head
Big Time - Peter Gabriel

Should be mountain range

Several players broke the previous record for the month of 30 points, and at least one more player could have had they not did what a few players done and not noticed the bonus for correcting the lyrics...
