Well, that ends THAT discussion.

This, IMO, was a much tougher stack than Courtney's from yesterday. The "Sideways" question was very tough (although I did remember it, but only after much thought...I remembered how surprised I was to find out that Miles' prized wine was a white, rather than a red, is all. And that "Napoleon Dynamite" question never did come to me, even though I've seen it a couple of times.

Then there's the Lady question. They did make this REALLY tough, since three of the movies were separated by only 4 years. I've seen three of the movies (I'm not a huge western fan, so I think I can be excused for having missed the John Wayne/Jean Arthur oater "A Lady Takes a Chance," which I just looked up), and while I knew "Lady and the Tramp" was much later than the other two I've seen, I couldn't have separated "The Lady From Shanghai" and "The Lady Eve". I'd jump it.

I don't think it was a coincidence that Gregory was on a roll before the fake out, and afterwards couldn't answer a single question. He gasped when Meredith outright lied by telling him he didn't look at the question carefully. He was a totally different contestant from that point on -- as if someone had thrown a switch. His lack of confidence caused him to use two JTQ lifelines on answers he "suspected" (correctly) were right, which led him to walk on his last question of which he was even less sure.

I'm sure Meredith thinks the fake-out is cute, clever and perhaps is even a part of her signature as game show host, but the FO can have consequences. And with this contestant they were quite costly.

It was a surprisingly definitive statement. OTOH, I'd like to hear testimony from an audience member confirming that they really did get one-year subscriptions. It's possible Meredith just flubbed that line and TPTB didn't bother editing it out.

Here's an article about Gregory's appearance.

http://www.sunjournal.com/oxford-hills/story/990348
Charette started trying to get onto the show in 2000, traveling to New York during summers to audition and take practice tests as part of the show's vetting process, he said. A few years of rejections didn't deter him, nor did a close call with “Dancing with the Stars,” when the show asked him to come to New York, but ultimately did not select him to compete.

“People kept saying I was crazy, but I said, 'You know, I'm going to keep trying,'” Charette said of the years of failed attempts to make the cut.
Didn't you play the Phone Game, Gregory?
Finally, a "Millionaire" producer called him last October, asking him to come down to New York once more. Three weeks later, he was filming the show.
They called him to come audition again? I'm guessing this report isn't quite right. Maybe he was on the e-mail list about tickets being available.

Why would he have been a prospect for Dancing With the Stars? Is he a star? Is he a professional dancer when he's not working at the bank? Why do I think this story provides semi-imaginary embellishments?

I took it as he was called to be a contestant for the Dancing With The Stars week and they had too many contestants. My take could be way off.

Oh! I didn't remember Dancing With The Stars Week on Millionaire. So he was left in the green room. That makes sense. I wonder if the newspaper reporter believed he was "so close" to showing of his terpsichorean talents on that other show.

Yeah, that sounds reasonable, kusch. There's a lot of confusion that can come from leaving out the word "week."

So is Gregory an over-the-top DWTS fan as well as an over-the-top movie fan? Did he almost have his big break in Riverdance before Michael Flatley told him he wasn't coordinated enough? :P

I forgot about DWTS week to the point of scratching my head reading Kusch's post. That does sound like what happened. Especially since the real DWTS tapes in California.

Here's another odd statement.
Charette didn't watch the show Tuesday night. “I've been kind of kicking myself since November,” he said, adding that he hadn't used all his "life lines," the hints and help from friends that a contestant can use if they don't know an answer. “Coulda, woulda, shoulda,” he said.
Clearly he did use all his lifelines. I am guessing he is being misquoted here, having said something about wishing he had not used his lifelines when he did. Also, maybe he was a potential contestant for the Dancing With The Stars Week theme week WWTBAM shows awhile back, but didn't get into the hot seat. And finally, maybe his call asking him to tape came 3 weeks before his taping day. That would all make sense.

In all honesty, I found his pre-fake-out theatrics genuinely annoying and at first, I thought if there was ever a contestant who deserved no punches pulled Meredith fake-out, he was it. But after the fake-out, I got the feeling the theatrics had been covering up some serious insecurities, and I felt sorry for the guy, especially after he never pulled it back together. The fact that he didn't watch his episode says a lot about his disappointment.

He was just giving the producers what they wanted from him. And Meredith totally sucker-punched and decimated him. But maybe the producers wanted that too.

I didn't notice but I should still have this on my DVR, so I'll check it out. That would be an incredibly strange glitch. Perhaps it spurred Meredith to enact her evil fake-out on that question.

Good eye by peiboy91!

I caught one of the two incidents among the screenshots I took for the purposes of transcribing that day's show, but did not notice the goof:

Here is when it went back to the real category.

Could the right side of these particular screens be something compiled and edited in later?

I checked my DVR.
It first happened while showing the categories just before the third question and again just before the fourth question. They broke for commercial after the fourth question. After the break, they showed the categories before the fifth question, but the glitch was not visible. In both cases the categories were correct initially but "Horror Films" changes to "Final Destination" while the categories are being display and Meredith is leading into the next question. I wonder how many of the audience noticed this?

If this is a new secret lifeline, I like it!

It's not the best quality (a camera video of a PVR recording), but here's a YouTube clip of that 'Horror Films' glitch, along with the fake-out (they are irritating, but in her defense, I think this was Meredith's best fake-out to date).
