I learned this in a Dick Francis novel.

This is the fourth time this season a contestant has gotten the $250K question wrong. I must say that these contestant really want to take the risk and try to go all the way.

OK, she's a WE/WE® but I gotta say that's pretty impressive.

Chalk me up as having no idea. I probably wouldn't have used ATA because this seems a little more obscure than the average pop culture question. JTQ please.

I'd have used my second JTQ on this one - "ostrich" is used in boots, so it might be used in athletic shoes also, making it a tough choice.

Unfortunately taking risks sometimes has its pitfalls. I knew this one, so would have been going on to the $500K question, albeit with no lifelines.

I've heard this before. I've also heard that it's an urban myth. If I really cared enough, I'd go look it up.

The University of Denver has an article acknowledging Carter's pledge of her winnings.

http://www.duclarion.com/news/women-s-c ... -1.2037645

Looks like they missed an opportunity for on-screen recognition.
"With this meaningful gift, we are able to impact the lives of even more women, helping them advance and lead through education," said Lynn M. Gangone, TWC dean.

...

Gangone, who is Prescott's long-time friend, flew to New York to support Prescott. However, Prescott's spot was not taped the day Gangone was in the audience. She returned to Denver and Prescott played the next day.
