Dang. I thought we'd get to see a $500K question, today. No way was this one to trust the audience on.

Based on this transcript, too cute by half, but in light of her stones I can live with that. I'd have used ATA and one or two JTQs by this point (depending on what I'd have done with the first question yesterday), so I'd have $250,000 (Betelgeuse is a shoulder, Rigel is one foot) and may or may not have had a free look at the top question. --Bob

I saw the Facebook video and...

it emphasized how she was the first contestant this season to answer the first ten w/o a lifeline. Based on previous teasers I was sure if she saw the $500K question, they would spoil that. In fact I thought she would miss the $100K as some previous contestants who saw the $250K question had that fact spoiled and this week had no reference to a $250K question.

One non-spoilerish thing about the Facebook spoiler, I had her first three questions today transcribed last night. That head start helped me finish well before the J! online test.

Thanks for posting Chad! I wanted to watch today after I saw she was on yesterday's show, but my TiVo completely skipped over the recording for whatever reason!

I was disappointed, but not surprised-- they always do the whole "For 100,000-- For 250,000-- etc etc" whenever a contestant climbs up the tree, but for her they didn't. I figured we would've seen a "For 500,000+" if she had actually made it that high. Ah well.

I thought she did a nice job. Her 'shout outs' of how she knew an answer got a bit old quick, but I give her props for going for it.

I had a feeling she'd lose before seeing the $500K question. At that point I wouldn't even consider ATA unless it was a pop culture question like the star wars question the other day. I didn't know either of the 2 so I'd be looking at the $500K question hoping it was either a pop culture question to make ATA not completely worthless or a question I knew.

The only thing that bothered me about Joann was her faux modesty, claiming not to know answers that she clearly did.

What a shame - she was doing so well. I guess the audience was thinking about Orion's belt (or maybe not thinking, since Orion is known for the belt, not the bellybutton). Orion has two "name" stars - Rigel is Orion's foot (or toe) and Betelgeuse is the opposite shoulder.

Orion's left shoulder is Bellatrix, a name well-known to Harry Potter fans.

In hindsight, it was a huge mistake to go with the audience, but it was a decent percentage and she was risking $43,600 for a guaranteed look at the million dollar question.

It seemed strange to me that "Bellybutton" was used instead of navel and also spelled as one word. I don't know for sure but I would be surprised if any constellation persona has a star that indicates that part of the anatomy.

Before asking the audience, Joann says, "This is a great movie. (pause, then audience laughs) Tim Burton."

I wonder if that influenced the audience to go for the "cute" answer. Or is it something as simple as the fact that belly and betelgeuse both start with the same two letters??

Too bad she didn't choose this question to use her Dad's SAT advice.

All in all, she played superbly. She knew a lot, and knew what she knew, and when she needed a lifeline. The only mistake was choosing the wrong lifeline for the last question.

Let's say you reach the $250K or $500K question with only the ATA remaining, and when you see the question you have no clue and know the audience will have even less of one. Do you immediately walk away, or do you use the ATA just to let the audience play along and then, regardless of the result, say "I'm still not sure," and then walk?

Agreed. I'd also try my luck with giving that awkward speech to the audience about not answering the ATA unless they're sure of their answer, in an attempt to cut down on some of the random guesses.

I'd also hope that all the audience keypads were working correctly - when we were in the audience back when mikehardware was in the Hot Seat elwing's keypad automatically answered "D" every time it was activated.
