I'm surprised more children don't think of that as their last name. :D

The bar means to multiply the value of the numeral by 1,000. That's not something known by the average person, however. I don't blame him for jumping.

Never heard the expression but it seems logical.

I don't recall this being mentioned in any of the hoopla about the introduction of the iPad and since I don't own one, I would have had no idea. JTQ for me.

This is an unfortunate slip in the research department. They received none of these books, because iBooks (which included the relevent book) was quite notably not pre-installed on iPads:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... ch_LEADTop

I located an Stephen Fry article in Time that mentioned this as a fact, which is probably the source for this question. So you can blame the fact-checkers at Time in part. Because iBooks was announced at the same time as the iPad and most power users installed it immediately, it was quickly forgotten that it was not received with the iPad itself.

You could say that purchasers "received the right to a digital copy" or many purchasers downloaded this book, but iBooks was just an app you could download to your iPad like any other. You could just as easily say they received a free digital copy of every work of Shakespeare because there's a free app for that. There were no iPads in April 2010 which were received by consumers with even a snippet of any of these books on it.

This was quite a good question other than the false premise. I had read a little bit into the free book on my iPhone and it turned out that the first sentence provides an answer for this otherwise-difficult question from a couple months before (spoiler is for the 2/1/2011 episode only):
