Here's Wikipedia's explanation of the Royal Mail Ship designation. Since that indicates a contractual relationship with the Royal Mail (i.e., the British post office) it's not even a direct connection with the crown.

Ouch! A really bad Dursting by the audience. It makes sense, though, since HMS means "His/her Majesty's Ship" and as an analogue RMS could be "Royal Monarch Ship". Having read much on the Titanic (starting with "A Night to Remember" in grade school) I knew this one.

That depends on the statement.

"Boring MAWGs can too make good contestants" probably wouldn't do it. :|
