Fire up the needle, because they have another one on the way!

I shocked myself by knowing #9 because art is not my thing. But I had it in the back of my mind that I read it somewhere.

I enjoyed watching your show, Jay. In fact, I actually sat, facing the television, for the entire episode, as opposed to my usual practice of tuning in the correct channel and wandering around the house doing any 15 other things.

You are a cutie! Never fear, that's not flirtation, merely the judgment of decades of astute observation. Also, although I gather that you are primarily an on-topic poster, I think you might be surprised at the number of fellow musical theatre fans that are scattered among this group. Are you also a performer -- actor, singer, dancer, or triple threat -- looking for your big break?

Great job, Jay!

I would've probably ended up walking away with $25k, too. I initially thought only the Diet but then talked myself into both.

Welcome to the $25k club!!

Aaargh! Preempted in Los Angeles by coverage of two kids accidentally shot at a local high school. (Some idiot brought a handgun to school in his backpack. The gun went off when he put the backpack down.) If this ends up on YouTube, I'd appreciate a link. --Bob

Thanks guys! Lots to tell about this taping and the process of getting there. I was called in with less than twelve hours notice, and was then carried over to the next tape day...

Spoiler
I was the first one to tape that day, so the audience was fresh and REALLY enthusiastic... which I admit to playing up to. But Meredith did too. There was probably a good six or seven minutes of my segments that were edited out. Meredith did a couple of banter bits with Noah, my roommate -- which actually was a huge loss. Noah's very funny, has great delivery and comic timing and had the audience giggling throughout. "He's... he's wearing MY clothes."

We also chatted about my (then) upcoming trip to Korea and my recent fundraising efforts. They did an amazing edit job, though - seamless.

As for the questions - the big lesson I learned for any future contestants is... take your time to carefully consider your knowledge and how it relates to the question. Had I taken about five more seconds on the first question, I would have noticed "da Gama" instead of "de Gama" and would have nailed it, and not used the jump. As adeptly described here, I totally agonized over the planetary discovery because I knew Uranus was the only one that really fit the time period but couldn't convince myself solidly enough that was it... and worst - the final question sent my mind racing: I've dropped a soda in the sink as mentioned... I was trying to remember from a previous month's picnic lunch about sodas that had been kept in cold water in a kiddie pool as the day progressed (I remembered them both floating - as it turns out, because the water was too shallow). BUT... the first thing I said ("They're different, chemically") is what would have gotten me to the correct answer if I hadn't abandoned that line of thought as quickly as it popped in. (Diet Pepsi doesn't have any calories - a Calorie is the measure of energy required to raise the temperature of water one degree)
Shoulda, coulda, woulda - but I'm thrilled with the end result, regardless.

Camaro, I was an actor a number of years ago, but stopped pursuing it about seven years ago ... but wouldn't turn down any offers! Actually going to try to get into voiceovers and broadcasting (I offered to take over for Meredith if she decided not to renew her contract during one of the breaks)... talk more theatre and I'll try to lurk less. :)

Bob, I posted the video to Facebook for my international friends. I have to split it up to upload to YouTube, and I'm just too tired for that today... will post tomorrow!

Good job Jay. Gutsy.

But on the planet question, you can see Mercury, Venus, and Saturn with the naked eye. Uranus is the only one of the four requiring a telescope to see.

HI VT... I recorded it on a DVD recorder and then ripped it from the DVD... hence the lessened resolution. You can also do a direct connection from the DVR/cable box but my computer is not adequately outfitted to handle that.
BackInTex wrote: But on the planet question, you can see Mercury, Venus, and Saturn with the naked eye. Uranus is the only one of the four requiring a telescope to see.
One of the thoughts that crossed while I was considering the question, but I discounted that because I have never been able to tell the difference between a planet and a star with the naked eye - and I was somewhat unsure about being able to see Saturn without aid of a telescope. In retrospect, I see that's really, really stupid. :)

Even though I haven't pursued anything with it in seven years? Those are some pretty loose standards there. But since maybe I'll step back into the arena after all, it's not that far fetched.

First and formost - congrats Jay - it was fun watching you play!

Since we are lowering the bar on WE/WE can I be counted - I grew up in the WABC viewing area (Monticello, NY - 90 miles from NYC but all our major stations were the NYC affilates). I had the title role in the hit production of "Tommy's Problem" in 5th grade and in 9th grade I was a member of the chorus in our H.S. production of "Hello, Dolly!"

I have an Aunt and cousins in the Bronx and a Sister who lives on Long Island, various cousins in the other parts of NYC and family still in the Catskills - so if I'm ever up your way, we can share Poutine and Pepsi together!

---Jay (who sat in the hotseat 2 1/2 years ago)

Thanks! I'm glad I got the chance to see this. It looks like you had a great time.

As a sidelight, this very Bored (well, to be precise, one of its predecessors) is where I learned the answer to your $100,000 question. The sugar substitute they use in Diet Pepsi is so sweet that they don't need to add very much of it to get the necessary flavor. In contrast, when they use real sugar, as in (regular) Pepsi, it goes in by the ladleful.

Enjoy your winnings! --Bob

Had a blast. Loved having the rowdy audience, too - just too much fun that ended too abruptly for my liking!

In the last twenty four hours I'm recalling so much out of my own experience that would have directed me to the correct answer if I hadn't rushed myself - and while I know how unbelievably fortunate I am to have played, gotten that far, and won as much as I did - it's like an invisible antagonist following me around right now. It'll pass, but some psychology student somewhere should write a term paper on this.
