Here's the article where I guess this tidbit comes from.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/artic ... wers-fresh

Their first choice is diluted 7-Up or Sprite, but they also mention "an alcohol like vodka":
Vodka has a different effect on a bouquet of flowers: When added to a vase, it preserves them, probably by inhibiting ethylene production, Dole says. Ethylene is a ripening gas emitted by plants that helps them mature. Inhibiting this gas could slow wilting. Vodka, however, is not a very viable preservative. Plantslike many peoplecan only tolerate small concentrations of alcohol, up to eight percent, Dole explains, and 80-proof vodka from the liquor store is 40 percent alcohol. To be effective rather than harmful, the liquor would need to be dilutedInstead, growers use a more effective preservative, silver thiosulfate, which also inhibits ethylene, he says.
So, while vodka is the specific alcohol mentioned in the article, it seems like beer would work the same way, without needing to be diluted.

I've heard of using aspirin or sugar, but not vodka.

If he's so smart, why does he have no lifelines?

I guess it's the amount of alcohol in the vodka that makes it work better than beer.

I supect that the main problem with using beer is that your living room then smells like beer. Yeah, I realize that some people might think that is a good thing, but they are not usually the folks who put flowers into vases.

The article mentioned ethylene inhibition and ascribed it to the alcohol content. I missed the part about the 8% threshold.

Yes, there's the aesthetic aspect to that, as well as to the color issue, but the Scientific American article didn't address aesthetics.

Okay. To be scientific about it, the yeast and other ingredients in beer -- just as in adding sugar -- would enhance bacterial growth.

I usually take the aspirin after I've had my vodka.
