Never mind. I was going to quibble about whether a pearl is a "gem."

The dictionary says that I am confused. I may have to get a new dictionary that agrees with me more often.

Find one that equates gem with jewel.

I never heard of the song, but the only one of the four that has a zipper, and the only one of the four that goes on the ground, and the only one that wraps around you is a sleeping bag, so I thought that ould be the obvious answer.

Perhaps the same way it is 'obvious' that Jethro Tull could never have won a Grammy for Hard Rock/Heavy Metal...

I know that was the obvious choice -- I even said so after seeing the results. I just didn't remember where the question had been in the unrandomized Topic Tree, and I was afraid it might be a trick question! I really didn't want to go home so soon, and I'd never even heard of the song, but I figured it was something the audience would get right.

Yes, in retrospect I definitely wish I'd gone with the obvious choice here and saved the ATA for the later Viral Videos question. :(

Thanks -- I'm glad I was interesting to watch! I felt bad I didn't have a lot of fascinating stories :p

Sadly, all the money (all of it that's left after taxes, anyway!) is going straight to student loans. The alpaca farm is more of a retirement plan, so look for me in rural New England, but not for another 30 years.

There are two acronyms we use a lot when discussing contestants.

WE = Where Else? = A contestant from NYC or the WABC viewing area.

WE = What Else? = An actor, singer, comedian, performing artist or someone similarly employed in the entertainment industry.

You're from Where Else, but (as far as the transcripts indicate) not a What Else. (If someone is both, we use the acronym WE/WE.)

Now, since you're new here, some explanation is in order, before you start wondering why so many people here are hating on New Yorkers, especially those nice young actors and actresses. This community goes back to the premiere of the show in 1999 and many of us, who have been trying to get on the show since that time, look on those early days as the good old days. In particular, many of us were happy about the Phone Game, which gave everyone a chance to qualify for the show from anywhere in the country, simply by answering some trivia questions. And it didn't matter how old we were or what we looked like or what kind of stories we had to chat about.

Those criteria changed with the advent of auditions, mostly held in New York, and with the producers favoring contestants with certain demographics and certain personalities and talents, particularly those with experience in public entertainment. So now, when we make observations about contestants from these groups, we're really commenting about the casting decisions of TPTB (The Powers That Be) and not about the contestants, themselves.

A long-winded answer to a short question...

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. I remember watching the original show, but I think I was too young to call in -- I would only have been about 12 when it began! (Sorry, sorry....)

I'm not sure if my WE experience was too typical, either (although I don't think most of this story made it to air). My dad's office always watches the syndicated Millionaire together on their lunch break, and when my dad visited the city, the one thing he wanted to do was watch a taping of Millionaire. The auditions were held immediately afterward; he wanted to do it for fun, and I went along with that, too. I made it past the three (four?) rounds that night and got a phone call not too long afterward. That's why I had to make my dad my official companion, even though my mom and other friends were also in the audience!

I know other members here have made it on-air before, but if I can answer any questions about the current setup, I'd be happy to.

I've been wondering a few things. First, do they confirm at any point that the pre-randomized topic tree is, in fact, in intended order of difficulty? Two, how long do they give you to try to memorize the pre-randomized tree? Three, does the post-randomized tree remain visible to the contestant anywhere?

Congratulations on your run. I enjoyed watching you play. --Bob

So you passed the written test, then had the first interview and they asked you to stay for a videotaped interview? Did your dad pass the written test? If so, did he get to the videotaped interview?

We can't really say if any experience is typical, since we only have an incomplete set of anecdotes. If you stick around here, you'll learn that I grumble a lot, so much so that I've got a trademark on it. And parts of your story, that you accompanied someone else who really wanted to be there*, but you ended up getting selected for the show, is one of the things that make me <grumble>®.

*Sort of. It sounds like your dad was really only serious about seeing the show and not about auditioning for it. So my grumble is only semi-serious, this time. :)

Thank you! I only wish I could've stuck around longer. :p

They definitely don't say that the pre-randomized topic tree is meaningful at all. In fact, I think I remember a disclaimer that the original order is irrelevant. However, I'd done some googling before I taped, and I knew I wanted to keep my eyes peeled for the top two just in case!

They don't give any meaningful amount of time for us to memorize the tree -- for me, and in the other tapings I saw, it was just as quick as it appears on TV. The pre-randomized tree never appears again.

I believe the randomized tree is visible somehow. I don't think it's on the screen easily visible from the contestant position, but I think it is visible from Meredith's position, meaning the contestant would only have to turn a little (which isn't a big deal). I think it would also be fine to ask about the randomized tree, either while taping or on breaks. In the break between my episodes, I asked a lot of tactical questions ("how many questions am I from round 2?" "what happens if I get this next one wrong?" "if I walk on the next question, do I get half my bank?" "what's my bank again?") and the assistant was really ready and willing to answer.
Bob78164 wrote:Do you remember the date of your audition, and your taping date? I'd like to add you to the Audition List. Also, am I correct that you received the video audition after the initial screening interview? --Bob
I attended the taping/audition on September 9. I believe I taped my episode on October 7 (I never did get a postcard, just a phone call), and they originally told me it would air January 6 & 7. (Of course it wound up airing December 16 & 17 -- the publicist e-mails you 10 days in advance to let you know.)

The Scantron, short-answer personality tests, interviews, and screen test were all the same night, September 9. It was a long night!

My dad didn't pass any of the tests. I think there were 200-300 people who stayed for the written test, about 10-12 people who were asked to remain for the written tests, maybe 5 who had longer producer interviews, and only two of us who wound up getting screen tests. The other person was a man in his early 30s, I would guess, who had flown in from Colorado just to audition(!) -- he'd daydreamed about it for a long time, and the tickets were a birthday present from his wife. He was a really nice, personable guy, and I'd love to know whether he made it or how he did. I think he was a firefighter, if anyone spots a contestant matching this description!

It's true my dad really wanted to see the taping, but I think he had also arranged it to see how well I could do. I wasn't really attached to Millionaire beforehand (sorry!), but in 2008 I auditioned for Jeopardy (which I was much more attached to -- I grew up watching it and have never really adjusted to the missing mustache). I made it as far as the contestant pool, but didn't get the call before they scrubbed the pool. I think my dad wanted to set me up and see what would happen if I took the Millionaire test.
