Above for the aviation basics...
A little dog with an old lady. Nice, heartwarming??
Not if one is aboard a USAir flight from Newark to Phoenix, and the unidentified 89 year-old passenger lets her little dog, Mandy, a 12 pound terrier, out of the accompanying dog carrier.
2 minor bites, and a diversion to Pittsburgh. Here, in more detail, from the "Dog News Examiner" of examiner.com, a website that didn't play nice with me, so I won't give a link..
The flight, scheduled to travel from Newark to Phoenix, hit a snag after a small dog got loose en route.
Not only did the 12 lb terror, er - terrier, get loose, but she was a bit rattled after her sedatives wore off and she ended up biting a flight attendant that was trying to capture her, as well as another passenger that attempted to calm her.
The dog, a Manchester Terrier named Mandy, belongs to an 89 yr-old New Jersey woman - name undisclosed. According to the airline rules, dogs are allowed on board for a fee, but they are to remain caged throughout the flight.
No doubt, the 122 passengers on board Flight 522 wish that the dog had indeed, remained in her carrier. The pilot decided to divert the plane to Pittsburgh to ensure that the bite victims could be properly attended to.
Those injured were treated by paramedics and were able to re-board the flight and continue on to Phoenix. The woman that owns Mandy will not be charged in the incident.

Why not? Because she's 89? I'd bet if she'd been 29 or even 59 that there would have been some sort of charges brought. Keep the dog where it belongs, lady. Heck, there have been
kids I would have liked to see caged up for the entirety of some flights.

Well, yes, because she's 89. No matter how much criticism the TSA gets, I think they've got some supervisors who realize what a public relations disaster it would be to arrest an 89-year-old woman on the charge of letting her little dog out of her cage. And if they didn't realize that immediately, no doubt the airline reminded them of it and suggested they let this one go.

Unless there are unusual circumstances with this flight, such as she was moving to live with a son or daughter, I would ban her from ever again flying without a two-legged companion to watch over her. If she let the dog out of the carrier after she was told not to do so, as some reports have stated, then she is too addled or too obstinate to follow other safety instructions in case of emergency. The other passengers did not deserve to have their trips delayed because of her stupid actions.
She and her ill-tempered, badly trained bit of fluff will lead to other dog owners finding more difficulties in taking their well-behaved animals on board.

The article doesn't say how serious the bites were that this terrier inflicted, but it's possible that the pilot overreacted in diverting to Pittsburgh for medical treatment. They do still have first aid kits on jets, don't they?
I suspect, after all the commotion she caused, this lady won't be eager to fly again, any time soon.

Dog bites are very likely to cause infections. I think people bites are worse, but I would like any laceration would be an issue. The fact that one of them was a flight attendant may have made them want to make sure their staff was able to perform their duties in case of an emergency.
Did they remove the woman and her dog when they landed as well? Or were they permitted to continue the rest of the flight?

Okay, I went and looked at CNN. They removed the dog and woman who were then put on a later flight.

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsbu ... 12570.html
Officials found an alternate flight for the dog and its owner, an unidentified woman from New Jersey who was headed to Palm Springs, Calif.
Here's a more detailed description of the start of the incident:
Walsh said it appears the dog became agitated as its sedatives began wearing off. As a man seated next to the woman tried to soothe the animal, the dog bit him, broke out of the canvas carrier and ran up and down the aisle of the plane barking, Walsh said. A flight attendant who grabbed the dog also was bitten.
And about the bites:
The bite victims reboarded the flight and continued to Phoenix after paramedics treated them, said Allegheny County police Inspector David Walsh. One of the bites punctured skin, but was not considered serious.

How in the world did you equate that to me thinking the lady was a terrorist?
29, 59, 89..... if you let your mutt loose on a plane in flight, you should have to answer to that...... downtown..... or OK, Gitmo if she's a real hard case and needs to be maced and/or tased......

You say I'm throwing bullcrap in a mamby pamby world, so I just ran in the direction of your thought.
Anyway, there are further details I posted later in the thread, which help clarify the incident, but I guess you haven't read that yet.
Go ahead. I'll wait...

Okay, so you think that's a wonderful idea and only sissies would think otherwise.
Don't bother reading the rest of the thread with the quote that suggests that she never actually, deliberately, and with callous disregard to the rules and the safety and comfort of her fellow passengers, let the dog out. From that quote, which you won't bother to read, it appears that the dog got out accidentally, while another passenger was trying to help calm down the dog in distress.
Have a nice day!

Although you seem to have defenestrated your original stated criterion that audience reaction figures into countdown consideration, no one could possibly appreciate this horrific phonied-up rendition of Mangy Rodents on a Plane.

If audience participation did not play a part in my decisions, Plasma Partner would have never even made the countdown last year.... and I can think of a couple of others this year that will only make it via the opinion poll factor.....
But maybe we can get the Director of Promos to take you up on that Squirrels on a Plane idea.....
