Yesterday FlyBrick mentioned that he was retiring; in our office this is the Year of the Retiree. No fewer than seven people will retire this year, starting with one of our branch chiefs, whose last day is next Thursday. She's retiring after 38 years, all of which were in the same office (that's a rarity). The next month it's our procurement analyst (and my backup database administrator), then several contract specialists. Everyone saw this coming - all of us are about the same age and thus eligible for retirement at the same time. I'll be around for quite a while longer because, unlike these others, I got a "late start" in government service so although my age is right, my years are a little short (depending upon who's counting, it's either five or seven more to go). I've jokingly said that I'm the Mary Richards of the office, turning out the lights as the last one to leave. Not true, of course, we are bringing in new people to replace the retirees, but they're young (late 20s and early 30s) and who knows whether they'll stay in their positions for years as the current folks have.
