Quibble time: Fishkill is not in "upstate" NY; it is downstate (close to Newburgh) and within "WE" territory. To some people just about anything north of NYC is upstate.

It's been observed that the farther north you live in NY, the farther north you draw the line between upstate and downstate. The question writers were going with the NYC perspective, where everything north of the Bronx is "upstate".

The essence of the question required them to make a big concession in admitting that towns in upstate actually have their own names; i.e., that it's not all still an uncharted wilderness! :P

An audience dursting. What were they thinking? "Wain" is another word for "wagon" and the dipper with its handle could be seen as a wagon or cart. In LOTR it's referred to as "the Wain". A quick check of the Internet shows that the term "Charles's Wain" is used in Scandanavia.
