Lyrically Speaking - 1/23/08

by Hern Berford
It's no mystery LB loves the 80's, the decade of his youth. I'm a perfect testament to that, but apparently he's about the only one who remembered me. I mean, look at my avatar. That's the best picture he could find on the whole damn internet? For crying out loud, Dave Coullier was on our show before he went on to star in the pitiful Full House and the even more tragic America's Funniest People! Sigh!

Oh well, I couldn't come up with 12 songs that captured all that was great and wonderful about Nickelodeon in the 80's, so I had to find another nostalgic subject for LB... 80's movies. See, LB may not care about movies now, but back in the 80's, he and his sisters watched about everything on TV. And that only got worse when their Dad bought their first VCR in 1987, so they could watch the same handful of movies they taped off of HBO over and over and over and over again. LB would probably disown most of the movies alluded to below today, but trust me, he saw them all back in the day.

So for today's game, I found 12 songs that came out of movies LB saw a lot or maybe just once in the 80's. Don't be looking for Top Gun, Footloose, or any of those awful Brat Pack movies here, folks. That would be too easy, and LB is much too weird of a guy. Let's put it this way, LB said it was too bad there wasn't a song from Space Camp I could put in here... I told him he should be thankful I didn't include "Flying My Colors" from his 80's guilty fave The Care Bears Movie II....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 1 point for the 80's movie it was in. And please note, one of these songs is most definitely not from the 80's, but it was the primary song from a cheesy 80's movie nonetheless....

1. Let 'em say we're crazy, what do they know?
Put your arms around me, baby, don't ever let go
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby, we can make it if we're heart-to-heart

2. I Really Couldn't Help But Fall in Love With Her
Her Being There Has Made My Life Worth Living
I Knew It From the Start,
That I Would Lose My Heart

3. Can't you see that all we need to be a go-getter
Gotta make your own decisions, gotta go for what ya know
There comes a time in our lives, you wanna be bigger
Gotta keep, keep on pushing, you gotta learn to take control, yeah

4. Sometimes I just forget, say things I might regret
It breaks my heart to see you cryin'
I don't wanna lose you, I could never make it alone

5. Now you say you're startin' to feel the push and pull
Of what could be and never can
You mirror me stumblin' through those
Old fashioned superstitions
I find too hard to break
Oh maybe you're out of place

6. Don't bet your future, on one roll of the dice
Better remember, lightning never strikes twice
Please don't drive at eight, don't wanna be late again

7. History repeats itself
Try and you’ll succeed
Never doubt that you’re the one
And you can have your dreams

8. If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine

9. Ooh ooh what do you do
No one else can dance like you
So what's all the fuss

10. When I close my eyes I realize
You'll come my way
I'm standing in the night alone
Forever together

11. Won't anybody help us?
What are we running for?
When there's no where, no where we can run to anymore

12. Countdown its getting to the flight time
Night stars are shining in my eyes
My shoes are going to be the first ones
To dance deep up in the skys

I thought of this the other day when I heard about Suzanne Pleshette. One of the first movies I deemed "$20 vhs tape worthy" was that movie with her, Jerry Reed and Dom DeLuise in the pawn shop. I think it was called Hot Stuff?

I also remember the first boob sighting on the boob tube: Get Out Your Handkerchiefs.

Which has nothing to do with this. I thought yesterday was bad but, dude! You totally jinxed my bahonka the other day in the standings thread.

Strange thing is he didn't tell me about his rock & roll past until right before I closed up shop. He is now in video production and works for the NY Jets. I'm not sure what it was but my store seemed to attract drummers, Rod Morgenstein (Dixe Dreg), Liberty Devitto (Billy Joel) & Frank Funaro (Del Lords, Cracker) all used to shop in my store. Also Judson Ehrbar (Space Needle, Varnaline) was an employee there too. OK that makes up for not knowing most of the songs and losing the original post)

1. Let 'em say we're crazy, what do they know?
Put your arms around me, baby, don't ever let go
Let the world around us just fall apart
Baby, we can make it if we're heart-to-heart
Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starship - "Mannequin" (Even if you managed to avoid this movie, this was still one of the highest charting songs of 1987. This movie perfectly suited me and my sisters' entertainment needs back in the late 80's, and now that you know that, you know why this game was so universally bombed....)

2. I Really Couldn't Help But Fall in Love With Her
Her Being There Has Made My Life Worth Living
I Knew It From the Start,
That I Would Lose My Heart
Who's Johnny - El Debarge - "Short Circuit" (Great song, wonderful movie. My 6th grade teacher actually brought this in to class around the time it was released on VHS and let us watch it. It only had a couple of bad words in it, but that would probably have been enough to have a school district shut down nowadays....)

3. Can't you see that all we need to be a go-getter
Gotta make your own decisions, gotta go for what ya know
There comes a time in our lives, you wanna be bigger
Gotta keep, keep on pushing, you gotta learn to take control, yeah
On Our Own - Bobby Brown - "Ghostbusters II" (OK, I only saw this movie once and didn't care for it, but I love the song. Why can't songs sound this good nowadays!?!?!?)

4. Sometimes I just forget, say things I might regret
It breaks my heart to see you cryin'
I don't wanna lose you, I could never make it alone
Glory of Love - Peter Cetera - "The Karate Kid II" (Another song that did well on the charts, so no lame movie excuse. I think I wound up seeing this piece of crap even more than the original, but then again, it came out on HBO at the right time....)

5. Now you say you're startin' to feel the push and pull
Of what could be and never can
You mirror me stumblin' through those
Old fashioned superstitions
I find too hard to break
Oh maybe you're out of place
The Goonies R Good Enough - Cyndi Lauper - "The Goonies" (This movie is pretty well revered by most kids who grew up in the 80's, and is probably the movie in this game I saw the most times in my life. I've always liked this song, though it is not my favorite from Cyndi [That would be the classic "Change of Heart"], plus it was Nintendoized and used as the music in the even more classic Goonies II NES game. I always though the song was just called "Good Enough", though. One last note: The video for this song was actually released in 2 parts on MTV, and I saw it on some website about a year ago for the first time since 1985 [They never show it on VH1 Classic]...)

6. Don't bet your future, on one roll of the dice
Better remember, lightning never strikes twice
Please don't drive at eight, don't wanna be late again
Back In Time - Huey Lewis & the News - "Back To The Future" (Yeah, I could have used "Power of Love", but wanted to sneak this song in a game somewhere, since it was just as popular on the radio at the time BTTF was released, but became a part of the forgotten 80's.)

7. History repeats itself
Try and you’ll succeed
Never doubt that you’re the one
And you can have your dreams
You're the Best - Joe Esposito - "The Karate Kid" (Oh so close to a shutout, but KT was able to at least recognize it. I can't understand why this song didn't become a big sports stadium anthem... they play the heck out of it at the Frontier League Gateway Grizzlies games here....)

8. If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
Happy Together - The Turtles - "Making Mr. Right" (Four players got just 2 points in this game, and every one of them got them identifying this song. As for the movie, well, who can forget Ulysses the Android? More mindless 80's crap me and my sisters watched back in the day, but I'd have probably completely forgotten about this had they not made a video for this song with the movie in the background that used to air all the time on VH1C....)

9. Ooh ooh what do you do
No one else can dance like you
So what's all the fuss
Spies Like Us - Paul McCartney - "Spies Like Us" (Not the best of songs, but another Beast family classic...)

10. When I close my eyes I realize
You'll come my way
I'm standing in the night alone
Forever together
Dream Warriors - Dokken - "A Nightmare on Elm Street III: The Dream Warriors" (Fanny was the only one to recognize it, as I would expect a big VH1C fan to know since they show this video all the time. And since she was the only one to know it, I even gave her credit for not knowing which Freddy sequel this was in....)

11. Won't anybody help us?
What are we running for?
When there's no where, no where we can run to anymore
Invincible - Pat Benetar - "The Legend of Billie Jean" (This is my favorite Pat Benetar song by far, and it was going in an LS game somewhere, so I had the excuse. Didn't particularly care for the movie, but I remember seeing it....)

12. Countdown its getting to the flight time
Night stars are shining in my eyes
My shoes are going to be the first ones
To dance deep up in the skys
Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Bebop) - QFeel - "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" (The people who made this movie are evil for having to put it out at a time when my sisters could record it and watch it over and over and over and over again despite their poor suffering brother's protests. This movie is to this day still a cult classic with my sisters, but it had one redeeming quality.... cheesy 80's dance music, and this one was the best. They actually played this out of the blue one time on one of the Music Choice channels I listen to occasionally... so this song could have very easily wound up in a Friday game as well! As it stood, and I can't say I'm all that surprised, this was Shutout #3 on the season. And no, I didn't use the obvious song for this movie since 1. I already had a Cyndi Lauper song in this game, and 2. She refused to allow her version of the song to be used in the movie [I don't blame her], so they had to find someone else to sing it, and horribly....)

I've seen "Back to the Future" dozens of times over the years; most recently, just a few weeks ago. You'd think that I would've gotten the proper titles of the songs from that movie. Well, I've never claimed to be perfect. (Hell, I even failed to recognize the lyrics to "Happy Together", which is particularly embarrassing.)
