Even assuming that her hunch was worthless, taking a one in four guess here would have given Karolina an expected value of $81,250, instead of the $53,600 she walked away with. (Plus a one in four chance of looking at the $500K question, of course.)

yes, Marley, but chances are that was 28,600 dollars she really did not want to lose. In this kind of economy, I think people are more reluctant to gamble, and I think, at least in part, for that reason TPTB at WWTBAM changed the rules to make it more enticing to gamble.

The expected value calculations IMHO are only practical when you have repeated attempts at the question, not just one. I do think though this season so far we have seen more contestants gamble than in previous seasons. Last season it seemed like contestant after contestant walked with 15K.
