Fred Thompson Quits

Just heard this on CNBC.
Can't say as I'm surprised. He never seemed to have the "fire in the belly" needed to run for president. He hemmed and hawed his way into finally announcing he was going to run and then didn't go after it like his hair was on fire (sorry for the cliches).TheConfessor wrote:Just heard this on CNBC.
They showed a clip in "The Sunday Funnies" segment of "This Week with George S." of Leno saying something like: "Fred Thompson said that his campaign is going to be revitalized. Wouldn't it have to have been vitalized first?" (Far from an exact quote.)Jeemie wrote:I thought that in order to quit the race, you actually had to start running in it.
And Rudy couldn't fit his giant ego through the starting gate.wbtravis007 wrote:He was like an air balloon. Never got off the ground at all.

Kinda reminds me of this news...
Huckabee is no theocrat.Bixby17 wrote:So, who is left on the Republican side?
Huckabee the theocrat who wants to change the US Constitution to make it comply with God stuff

Calling him one is either intellectually lazy or intellectually dishonest.
I have a feeling there will be many on this bored from both sides sifting through the sewage from both sides singing this song.Bixby17 wrote:http://www.tv.com/south-park/douche-and ... mmary.html

I think Huckabee is a very likeable person. There are some admirable things he has done as governor.mrkelley23 wrote:From Dictionary.comTheCalvinator24 wrote:Huckabee is no theocrat.Bixby17 wrote:So, who is left on the Republican side?

theocrat: a person who rules, governs as a representative of God or a deity....
From Huckabee's "Issues" page on www.mikehuckabee.com:
"My faith is my life - it defines me. My faith doesn't influence my decisions, it drives them. For example, when it comes to the environment, I believe in being a good steward of the earth. I don't separate my faith from my personal and professional lives."
" I support and have always supported passage of a constitutional amendment to protect the right to life. My convictions regarding the sanctity of life have always been
clear and consistent, without equivocation or wavering. I believe that Roe v. Wade should be over-turned."
Bix's one sentence summary sounds neither dishonest nor lazy, any more than someone saying Hillary Clinton is a socialist in a pants suit. Especially when it's clear from context that she was more interested in snark than accuracy. I think Ron Paul wears very acceptable shoes, myself.
Just to be clear and not take things out of context, Huckabee was referencing Roe v. Wade and marriage in those off-the-cuff remarks. (As there are candidates, like Rudy, who are not Pro-Life.) He said nothing beyond those two areas. Hence, no theocracy, especially since he never has stated that he would be acting as God's rep as President.Bixby17 wrote:I think Huckabee is a very likeable person. However, this FREAKS me out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onHkywYc_1M
"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution. But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."
Gah. No no no and no.
I don't want anybody touching the Constitution, even to change it in a way that might benefit my personal beliefs.
I am done with US Presidents who I end up having concerns that they might think they are a part of the end of times or something.
You can call Mike Huckabee a lot of things, but the one thing that I don't think sticks at all is disingenuous.Beebs52 wrote:"When discussing faith and politics, we should honor the "candid" in candidate - I have much more respect for an honest atheist than a disingenuous believer."
A quote from Huckabee's website. This is an intriguing statement. It's also a bit disingenuous on his part, possibly pandering to those who are out and out non believers of any sort. Hey! At least he knows where you're coming from. As opposed to defining where the other Christian may be coming from. I would like to know his definition of a disingenuous believer. Because his doctrine doesn't align with mine on some issues.
I'm curious about what would be on your list (if anything) of "a lot of things" that you could call Mike Huckabee that would be unfavorable characterizations.TheCalvinator24 wrote:You can call Mike Huckabee a lot of things, but the one thing that I don't think sticks at all is disingenuous.Beebs52 wrote:"When discussing faith and politics, we should honor the "candid" in candidate - I have much more respect for an honest atheist than a disingenuous believer."

I'm reminded of something that Bobcat Goldthwait said many years ago: "Voting is like walking into an adult store and trying to decide which is going to be the least painful dildo."Bixby17 wrote:It reminds me of this South Park episode:
