Jake is 5 and learning to read. He points at a picture in a zoo book and
says,"Look Mama! It's a frickin' Elephant!"

Deep breath ... "What did you call it?"

"It's a frickin' Elephant, Mama!
It says so on the picture!"

........and so it does ... " A f r i c a n Elephant "

Hooked on phonics!!! Ain't it wonderful?

It's a relief that Jake wasn't looking at a picture of a fuchsia flower... :P

Hee! When we were little kids, we used to go thru the phone book looking for funny names -- I'm keeping mum on whether we ever *called* any of them

But anyhow, we ran across the name "Fuchs," which I believe is pronounced "Fyooks" (rhyming with "pukes" or "cukes.") But at that age, we couldn't imagine how one would pronounce such a word! The best we could come up with was "Fuches," sorta rhyming with "duchess."

Made me laugh!

I could also see it happening, which made it even funnier.

I used to work at a place that had a Dr. Fuchs. Which was really supposed to be pronounced the way you would think, not "Fyooks", but he gave up & pronounced it that way over in the US just because.

Nevertheless, we got our share of people who called with the 1st pronunciation, giggled, & hung up.

By the way, in German "V" is pronounced "F" so "Vicks" packages get a good laugh. "Cause that's the way they would say, uh, you-know. And, of course, "W" is pronounced "V", so "Volkswagon" is really "Folksvagon".

I think an "F" is an "F", though?

Reminds me of a story my friend told me...

Some years back he was driving out in the middle of nowhere with his young son (preschool age) when he saw a bear cross the road. A very large bear, in fact. Or, as Bob exclaimed to himself when surprised by the critter: "Look at that big f  ing bear!"

When they got home, Bob said to his boy "Tell Mom what we saw on the way home."

"A...BIG...F  ING...BEAR!!!"

I believe Bob slept on the couch that night.
