I am glad that Johnny Depp was nominated. I really liked him in Sweeney Todd.

And I'm glad that Viggo Mortensen was nominated for Eastern Promises. He was really good in that role. But Day-Lewis should and will win....

The biggest (but very deserved) surprise was Tommy Lee Jones for In the Valley of Elah. I was very impressed by his work there, but the movie bombed and had been all but forgotten.
Atonement squeaked in with a Best Picture nominee, but its director didn't despite some excellent technical work in the film.
If you are very young or very old, it's a lot easier to get an Oscar nomination for a supporting role, especially if you are very old and have never been nominated before (Hal Holbrook and Ruby Dee).
I thought Sean Penn's Into the Wild would have some legs but it faded. Ditto Sidney Lumet as a Best Director selection. Ditto Angelina Jolie for Best Actress. Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth was the worst of the nominations by far.

Hey, I've seen one of the movies this year! Which I think puts me one up on last year.
I don't think the Cate Blanchett Elizabeth movie even played here, unless it just had a 'for your consideration' opening. I loved Elizabeth so much that I've hated Gwyneth Paltrow ever since, just because Blanchette should have won that. I used to hate Shakespeare in Love in general, but Rupert Everett was such a fantastic Marlowe that I relented a bit.
The year of the Pianist I think I got every major category correct (I might have missed one, but I think I got them all down through screenplays) and won my pool. Since then I have sucked mightily, so I didn't even do one last year.

I felt the same way. Miramax basically bought Paltrow the Oscar that year. I was also surprised that
Shapespeare in Love beat
Saving Private Ryan that year.

Maybe it's my Washington bias--but I can't believe Charlie Wilson's War didn't get more nods--best picture, screeplay, and Julia Roberts was great. I'm wondering if no one wanted to vote for a political pic in an election year.

Oh goodness.
The only nominated film I have seen is Ratatouille.
:::sigh:::
