Actually, for someone who didn't know French, he was doing pretty well reasoning through the Savoir-faire question. If only he'd gone back to think about that choice he was "pretty sure" it wasn't after he'd come up with specific reasons why all the other choices didn't fit.

But, you do not need to know French. It has been adapted in the English language, with the same general meaning.

But I agree with you. There are countless words in many foreign languages that contestants would have never heard, without any recognizable Greek or Latin roots that they might be expected to know. The reason this was a fair question was that these phrases are in use here. If Shawn had tried thinking of the context where he heard those expressions, he might have figured it out.

Spanish could have helped him. "Savoir" is similar to the Spanish word "saber", meaning "to know" (as in "Quien sabe?" or "Who knows?"). Since there's no clock, there would be time for him to make the connection.

I must tell a "savoir faire" joke
An English Canadian was discussing French phrases with 3 French Canadian friends and the topic of the meaning of "savoir faire" was brought up.

To explain the phrase the first frenchman said "ah, savoir faire that is when you walk into your house and hear a noise in the bedroom , you open the door an see another man in bed with your wife and say ah coninuez"

The second Frenchman says "almost correct but you must say ah continuez, s'il vous plait".

The third Frenchman says "no you are both wrong, it is when you are in another man's house, in bed with his wife, you hear the door open and he says ah continuez, s'il vous plait

To honor his service in the Tennessee State Assembly, Crockett’s Lawrence County constituents presented him with a .40-caliber flintlock crafted by James Graham circa 1822. Crockett affectionately named this rifle “Old Betsy,” either after his wife or sister. He gave it to his son, John Wesley, when he headed for Texas in 1835. Today, it resides in the Alamo Museum collection in San Antonio.
