What happened to Wally/Funky Winkerbean?

Just in case any of y'all follow Funky Winkerbean --

Here's the sequence as I understand it:

After Lisa dies, we fast forward 10 years to where Les is working out some grief issues with some professional counseling. We meet teenager Summer and spend some time in NY.

We re-meet Pete Roberts, who has realized his dream of writing/drawing comic books.

And Becky is married to John, the comic book store owner. What happened to Wally?

You didn't miss any strips. I think the clear implication is that Wally was killed in combat, but Batiuk's been known to surprise us before.
