The American Film Institute has announced the subject, or rather subjects, of its annual film list which is typically one of the summer's most popular televised events.

Instead of one list, the AFI will countdown the top 10 films from 10 classic genres (animation, fantasy, romantic comedy, epic, gangster, legal, mystery, science fiction, sports and western). The show will be three hours long on CBS some time in June.

As usual, the AFI will start with a master list of 50 or so films in each category for their panel of voters to select from. Write-in votes are allowed, but rarely succeed. Obviously, the selection of certain genres and the films to place in them is somewhat arbitrary. In earlier years, the AFI picked separate lists of the 100 most thrilling, funny, romantic and inspirational films of all time.

It's interesting that science fiction and fantasy are on here as separate categories, but horror isn't.

Do they have the 50 films in each category? I'm wondering if there will be some crossover. I can see Lord of the Rings being in both the Fantasy and the Epic categories. And a movie like Once Upon a Time in America -- it could be in both the epic and gangster categories.

I went to AFI's site, and they do have the 50 films in each category. I'm looking through it, and I noticed that they have Some Like It Hot in the gangster genre. I guess it fits there more than in romantic comedies, but I just never considered that movie as a gangster movie...

I also just noticed that they have Dances With Wolves in both the Western and the Epic categories, so there is some crossover... (and Once Upon a Time in America is in both the gangster and epic genres as it should be)

Oh, joy... the AFI is releasing more of those WGAS lists...

They don't have a "gladiator movies" category. Humph!

These AFI specials have been very successful in the past at driving sales and rentals of older movies. Virtually all the marketing at video stores is devoted to the top one or two releases of the week. With the exception of Disney films and a handful of major classics, older films don't do well at all (almost all the sales/rentals of newly released movies come in the first six months on the shelf).

Studios also advertise summer blockbusters heavily during the special too.

Wow, I was surprised when I filled out my ballot.

The two hardest categories to get down to the "Ten Best" were Sports and Courtroom Drama, especially Sports. I hated having to sweep the leg of The Karate Kid.

I had trouble finding 10 that I saw and really liked on the Sci Fi list (I would have written in more than one if allowed the chance).

I totally skipped Westerns. (No way that I could honestly name 10)

BTW, my number #1 sports movie was not even listed.

However, such a movie would pale as compared to "Dr. Tom: The Greatest Coach Who Ever Lived! (Suck On It, Bear)"

I was breezing through my ballot until I got to the Mysteries. Not only did I write in Double Indemnity, I put it as my number one. And I would have written in a couple of more choices that weren't among the 50 if it had been allowed....

Now that I've filled this ballot out, I think I'm going to go ahead and send it in to the AFI even though I'm not on their panel of voters....
