Lyrically Speaking - 1/17/08
It's time for Theme Thursday! Each of the 12 songs below fits into some common theme.
1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 3 points for the theme....
1. There were lines on the mirror, lines on her face
She pretended not to notice she was caught up in the race
Out every evenin' until it was light
He was too tired to make it; she was too tired to fight about it
2. Listen to the wind blow
Watch the sun rise
Run in the shadows
Damn your love, damn your lies
3. I went down Virginia seekin' shelter from the storm
Caught up in the fable I watched the tower grow
4. If you wanna hang out, you've gotta take her out, _____
If you wanna get down, get down on the ground, _____
5. There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
Ther's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread
6. You had me several years ago
When I was still quite naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
7. He takes me to a movie, or to a restaurant, to go
Slow dancing, anything I want
Only when he's with me, I catch light
Only when he gives me, makes me feel alright
8. Like a cat and a mouse (cat and a mouse)
From door to door and-a house to house
Don't you pretend you don't know
What I'm talking about
9. To da one on da flam
Boy it's tough
I just toss that ham in the fryin' pan
Like spam
It's done when I come in
Slam
10. And they sure know how to use it
The don't abuse it
Never gonna lose it
I can't refuse it
11. Two kinds of people in this world
Winners, losers
I lost my power in this world
Because I did not use it
12. So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go

Its not fleeping fair for CCR to have done 2-count-em'-2 iconic Rain Songs.
Years ago I heard an interview in which Fogarty said "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" was about the band's demise, brought on by people arguing about who had the biggest & bestest hotel room & so forth when they all, he said, had king-sized suites, etc. I coulda previously sworn it was about a rainstorm!
It looks from the lyrics that "Who Will Stop The Rain" is about the band too.
Its also not fair that I thought the reason I heard CCR singing "Who Will Stop" in my head is that I knew they had done "Have You Ever Seen", so my brain was confused, rather than "its because they did both songs".
Grrr

It's about disillusionment with the government/Vietnam War. That last verse sounds like Woodstock, with the idea being, here were all these kids gathered together in the name of peace, but it didn't really change anything.

Theme? - What a coincidence that all 12 of these titles rhymed.... oh, wait, that was the theme - Rhyme Time. Anything letting me know you recognized the titles rhymed was good enough for the three points. I succeeded in finding songs with 12 different words with the "ane" rhyme, but some of the guesses showed that I had many more good choices I missed....

I must admit I was surprised that nobody else thinks of it as a JJ Cale song. To me, it's like saying that Roll Over, Beethoven is a Beatles song. Yeah, it is, but it's not THEIR song.

I'd never heard of JJ Cale until you and hermillion answered him in this game. I'm only familiar with the Clapton version.
I learn a lot more hosting LS than I do playing it....

Meanwhile, everybody should check out JJ Cale. He's like Jerry Jeff Walker polished up a little. As far as covers go, Cale does the best version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" that I've ever heard (and it appears to have become quite popular recently. I love that song, but its ubiquitousness of recent years has made even me slightly sick of it).
As for learning things, I recently learned that I'm apparently the only person on earth who has never heard of the Spin Doctors. Ha!

Re: ANSWERS/POINTS
Yeah but JJ Cale didn't really have the hit (radio airplay), the Beatles & ELO did. Now if the song have been After Midnight, you'd have an argument. I always answer with the group or artist that had the bigger hit or first hit with it.fantine33 wrote:!?!?!?!?!? Why wouldn't you accept it, it's his song! Hey, at least you got a point for the artist. I don't remember that being offered in the last LS when I only got one or the other on about half of the songs....
