Last night's Final Jeopardy

#1 Post by VAdame » Wed Jan 16, 2008 7:02 am

OK -- who (besides me & the former champ) immediately popped out with
Spoiler
Britney?
Sorry to say I didn't even think of
Spoiler
Katrina
until Alex mentioned "natural disaster!" But then, I wouldn't have thought of that being in the top 100 girls' names.

Karen has a good friend named
Spoiler
Catharina (pronounced KAT-a-ree-na)
who was, ironically enough, born in Germany (German mom, American dad) but spelled with a C not a K.

Not I - I couldn't think of any answer that would fit the category and clue.

I immediately yelled:
Spoiler
Katrina

The category "Baby Names" probably would have scared me into not betting much, but I had no trouble getting the answer right away. Did surprise me that it was that high up in favorite names in years past.

I did. Without a 2nd thought. But I guess now we know J! is higher-minded in their clues than "all that".

I was surprised they thought being in the top 100 meant anything. Top 10, fine. But top 100 down to #382 just didn't strike me as that significant.

I dinna think of Katrina.

I was thinking of losing election types and notorious movie titles and missed completely.

I didn't get it either. I wonder how far Andrew fell in popularity after the hurricane of that name hit in 1992. As I remember, that one did some major damage in South Florida.

Andrew dropped from #5 in 1991 & 1992 to #10 in 1993. It's been consistently in the top 10 since -- except for 1995 when it dropped to #11.

The last time Katrina was actually in the top 100 was the mid-80's -- it was #99 in 1986 & #93 in 1985! Had already dropped to #246 before the hurricane, but then took the big drop to #385 in 2006.

I do remember having this discussion with Karen's friend Catharina -- as in, "Huh! What do people want me to do, change my name?"

I don't imagine Paris was ever in the top 100, for either gender. The only Paris I know personally is a 16 year old boy.

Eh, might as well check the SSA website to be sure

Yep, the only time Paris cracked even the top 200, for girls, was 2004, at #157. For boys, it's even rarer, usually in the 600-1000th place, going back 100 years. But Paris never made the top 1000 for girls until the mid-1980s.
